DESIGN NAME: Holos
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Data Visualisation and Sonification
INSPIRATION: Historical development of numbers has shown that metaphysical symbolism of numbers is observed in all cultures throughout the world. Development of different technological advancements gave humanity an opportunity and tools to confirm the mathematical universe hypothesis. This project was inspired by mathematical phenomenon - Benford’s Law, which interprets and determines the probability of the distribution of number in different datasets.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Is there a way to measure harmony of the surrounding processes? The universe is mathematically accurate. This is why statistics depicting natural processes are usually distributed according to Benford's law and indicate the harmony of these phenomena. Benford's law is like a lie detector that can check the validity of data. Holos project explores applicability of Benford’s law in various spheres of human activity and natural processes, revealing the beauty of harmonic mathematical world order.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: About page of Holos project explains the digit distribution according to Benford's law and shows what colour and sound corresponds to each separate digit. Four data sets are provided with unique visualisation where user can check the distribution percentage and view the real time data that is used to create visualisation. User can also save the image. All elements are interactive and can be moved with the mouse.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January, 2021 in Vilnius. Integral part of the project - installation "holos.cerate" was exhibited in Titanikas exhibition center.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research examines the applicability of the law in various spheres of human activity and natural processes. The methodology of data sonification and related visualisation processes were reviewed. By merging different research results the platform was created, which can supplement the presentation of unattractive statistical data, explain the mathematical principle of the world structure and confirm the harmony of the data around us. The world of numbers can obtain fundamentally different form with the help of artistic interpretation.
CHALLENGE: Holos project is the result of autonomous work. The most challenging part was generative design which included programming and search for technical decisions. All calculations and real time data visualisations are programmed in p5.js language.
