| DESIGN NAME: Scratch Cave PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cat Scratcher INSPIRATION: The inspiration for Scratch Cave comes from the imagination of nature in childhood. We hope that cats and owners could share the innocent happiness together. The pet market in China is growing rapidly, with twenty-seven million cat owners and one point eight cats per capita. Young and highly educated consumers list the confusion quality of pet products and the impact of owning pets on the family environment as the top three pain points. To deal with these problems, the Scratch Cave is designed to improve the life quality for people living with cats. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Scratch Cave is a small cat furniture. People and cat can create their own way of playing. People can place it like a toy corner and participate in the process of playing. Using natural materials and modular design, try to awake the nature instinct of cats. Cave instinct is the act to search for security in the genes of cats, so the shape of the product is like an arch bridge or a cave. It has six times the scratch area of the ordinary cat scratchers, extending the service life and reducing the garbage. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Modular designed pieces composed an imaginative cave space, allowing varies ways to play. The arch surface is like tree-trunk in texture and radian. The cat can lie on the top lazily, or stand on the top looking at his territory; running out of the hiding cave, or leaping the hill. Scratch cave free up more floor space to eliminates dirty corners, lightens the housework burden. The packaging box is designed to be reused. Users can cut it by hand and assemble it into a bracket easily. And then it can be combined with the product to form a cat sofa. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project has been launched in Shanghai in December 2020 and completed in Shanghai in May 2021, and will be commercialized in China by the end of July 2021. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The whole design is made of degradable and renewable environmental protection materials. Felt and paper are taken from nature. In the design of series derivative products, we use wood as a derivative material, which can replace the inner core for reuse. We hope to reduce the use of plastic in pet products through more natural materials. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 680mm x depth 310mm x height 350mm; The packing box is 700mm x depth 330mm x height 355mm. The box body is designed to be reused, which extends the cat sofa function as an accessory. The sizes of large, medium and small are designed for novice kitten families, single cat families and multi cat families respectively, and can also be used in combination. TAGS: Pet, Home, modularization, environmental protection, childishness RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In China's fast-growing pet consumer market, there is a gap in consumer demand. The object of our research is the pet, also the pet owners. We want to strengthen the emotional connection between the two through the concept of product communication. After reading the Pet Handbook and Pet Design, we are inspired by the pet perspective and come to the conclusion that pet furniture must be able to resonate with human emotions. Based on the cat's height, jumping height, habits, preferences and other aspects, we worked out the current product form. We hope to use interesting and good design to influence people's life through pet. CHALLENGE: In the process of development, supply chain is a difficult part. We need to achieve the design within a reasonable cost and adhere to use environmentally friendly materials. Cat scratcher is a consumable with a single function in Chinese market, and such a large arc has not appeared yet, which makes the cost difficult to reduce. In our current pet industry environment, there is also a common problem of plagiarism. So we have taken some measures such as applying for a patent, besides, we also designed the reusable packaging to make the packaging and the product combine as a complete work, which resists plagiarism to a certain extent.
