DESIGN NAME: United Cinemas Terrace Mall Matsudo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cinemacomplex
INSPIRATION: The United Cinemas Terrace Mall Matsudo is in the shopping mall Terrace Mall in Matsudo city, Chiba prefecture in Japan. There used to a fruit and vegetable market and many people visited here. The mall is concepted as the mall along the people lives here with fulfilling and brighter days. We interpreted that this shopping mall become the central institution and various people comes here as young people, family and aged people. Then what the cinema complex being such place should be is offer the various kind of entertainment that accepted by every kind of person.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This movie theater has 3 types of special movie format theaters, Imax, 4DX, and ScreenX, and 8 ordinary movie theaters. The Imax is one of the largest screen size in Japan.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It has been six years the Matsudo city does not have movie theatres so that we have proposed the large, most advanced, and best facilities. We installed three latest movie formats so that many customers can enjoy movies with various way.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in 2016 and opening in 2019, located in Matsudo-city Chiba Japan, locates next to Tokyo. This movie theater opened with one of the largest shopping mall in the city which area used to a market.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Imax laser system, 4DX system, ScreenX system, Full Automation projection system, Digital signage system, BEMS Gem2, Theater management system
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 12screens, 6,293sqm, total capacity 1975 seats. One Imax theater, one 4dx theater, one ScreenX theater and 8 regular theater. Two back stage dressing room, projection room and back room for staffs. Imax technology from Canada.4dx and ScreenX technology from Korea, Construction company is SHIMIZU Corporation, a major general contractor in Japan.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The building has shopping tenants from basement floor to 3th floor, the Cinema is 3rd floor. The cinema is one of the anchor and symbol of this huge commercial complex. Because of the SNS, especially Instagram is in a trend among young people, this cinema takes some photo spot for it.
CHALLENGE: Because of Tokyo Olympic, construction cost had got very high and we had to make cinema complex unique with very much lower cost. There have two idea.
One is at the escalator. We installed many symbolistic blue liner LED lights hanged from ceiling along with the escalator that guests have to use and that makes guests feel futuristic and exited. Blue is also used in lobby as characteristic color.
The other is graphics. The LED lights make 3D and symbolistic color. On the theatre floor, at the contrast, has impressive 2D graphics around and they are made by dialogue of movies with mono-tone.
