DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Tipit

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Cashless Tipping Device

INSPIRATION:
The idea of the product was inspired by an existing problem of not being able to say "Thank you for your service" with tips when paying at the bar or restaurant with a plastic card or smart device. The principle of usage was inspired by amplifier design where the potentiometer wheel is being rotated to adjust sound settings, while in this case it is rotated to adjust the amount of tips to be given.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Tipit is the world’s first card reader that makes it possible to transparently leave tips with a bank card, phone or smartwatch. It is a cashless tipping device, which is primarily intended for cafés, bars and restaurants visitors, who want to thank the service staff. On the other hand, product is designed for waiters, bartenders who want to get tips digitally. Finally, it is also dedicated for managers, who want to provide an opportunity for staff to increase revenue.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The potentiometer attracts people to play with the device. It encourages people to leave a tip for the stuff even more. The user selects amount of the tip by turning the wheel. The torque encourages the user to explore - to turn more or to go back and balance the desired amount. All you need is to press the wheel to capture the amount and touch it with a card or smart device. The amount collected is distributed equally to staff at the end of the work, deducting only 15% of taxes.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project has started during the lockdown in 2020 Vilnius, Lithuania. Primary prototypes were made by the end of summer and finalized in December. Then small amount manufacturing has started. In the middle of 2021 first Beta versions of the product were placed in different restaurants and bars of Vilnius. In October of 2021 the product was highlighted during the design week in Vilnius and later was appreciated by national “Good Design” award in Lithuania.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Final product is made in small local production. Soft touch of the product is very suitable for using product and disinfecting after the day. The screen is bend in the proper position to be perfectly visible to the users. The potentiometer attracts to play and experiment with the device and that encourages to leave a tip for the stuff even more.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Depth: 212 mm Width: 127 mm Height: 83 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The public is making less and less use of cash for convenience, simplicity, hygiene, easier accounting and transparent billing. This leads to a problem, where there is no way to leave a tip with a cash to show appreciation for the service. An option to thank with a card through the main payment terminal is being transferred as employment-related taxes and then deducted from the amount. In this case, the waiter or bartender gets just over half of what the customer would like to leave.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was to develop a product which had no analogues and to discover a new user scenario for tipping. It had to be a new design, with a clear usage scenario that didn’t exist before for payment. In order to check the general proportions and imagine usage of the product in real environment during lockdown - the augmented reality was used. The playfulness is embedded in core of the product and angle of the screen is bent to the proper position to be perfectly visible for users.
