DESIGN NAME: Pashih
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Concept Store
INSPIRATION: The brand makes grass jelly desserts with Mesona as the key ingredient. The founders dedicated themselves to the mastering of such traditional craft and that is why we choose to use the cement mixture as the finished surface in contrast to the undulating form. The technique was imported into Taiwan during the Japanese colonial rule and is reminiscent of the early days in Taiwan. The form responds to the space in the theater as if it was grown out of it and creates a smooth transition.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The idea for the brand’s flagship is to translate the brand’s elements of hill and creek into a featured bar table that meander through the shop. The visitors "drift" along the table through the merchandise, the counter to watch the making of the dessert, then to the seating area. The table was constructed by laser-cut plywood and finished with a cement mixture, a traditional Taiwanese technique, to achieve a textured surface and reflect the brand’s value of combining new and the old.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design creates a smooth transition to welcome the visitors from the architectural space into the store. Inviting the visitors to experience a journey of the senses, to see, feel, smell and to taste the brand.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2020 and finished in May 2021 in Taichung.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design was modeled in Rhino and profiles of the freeform table were extracted for laser cut on plywood panels. The surface was finished with cement mixed with small pebbles, the surface was wipped with wet clothe as the final touch to reveal the texture of the pebbles.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total area is: 74 Sq. M.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We wanted to create a design that blends into the theater space as well as a representation of the brand, which we determined as a mixture of tradition and modern technology. The research was conducted through the study of free form designs, while modeling exercises and further investigation into the materiality to create a simple but yet unique space for the brand.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the design is the construction of the bar table while keeping cost under budget. The theater is a state owned building and there were strict constraints during the construction stage in terms of noise and dust control during operation hours. The design was carefully planned out so the workers can utilize Mondays, the off day, to execute such work.
