| DESIGN NAME: Epic Fail PRIMARY FUNCTION: Photographic Series INSPIRATION: This project was born out of the shock election result of Brexit and Trump. The certitude I was harbouring of both votes not being possible, accompanied by their reality, had a ripple effect on how I perceived mine, inspiring me to create a series of physical moments that become warped by our judgment. I wanted these moments to feel surreal but look palpable, so researching ways of shooting this series without doing any CGI was crucial. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by the political events that shook 2016, this series observes the dissonance between our perception and reality in the age of social media and catered news feeds. The aim was to question how our materiality can be warped by our opinions and judgements, using the existential currents of Jean Paul Sartre’s “Nausea”. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: wood, printed lycra, 3d printed plaster, high density foam, plexiglass. With only slight retouching, all the effects were created in-camera using a mix of gravity defying rigs, 3d prints, and optical illusions that were tested and created in my workshop for 1 month. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Photography dimensions for all pictures are: 5457 x 3637 pixels TAGS: photography, surreal, hand made, colours, technology RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The challenge was finding ways to create multiple physical systems that could create a warped reality to be photographed. The upside down set with the computer screen spraying emoji's took two weeks of rebuilding until we could safely ask our model to lay down in it.
