DESIGN NAME: CLX96
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Motor Yacht
INSPIRATION: The design optimistically embraces this yacht's role as a vehicle meant to honor the great outdoors, celebrate the sun and sea, while protecting her occupants from the elements and surprises of the deep at all times.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The CLX96’s iconic profile and numerous innovative features result from original thinking and smart design, integrating beauty and functionality. The unique double-reverse-angled House allows more exterior and interior space than any vessel in her class, including the first-ever sun deck forward of the Pilot House. With electrical up-down windows, the Pilot House converts from fully open to weather proof.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main idea was to blend the outdoors and indoors throughout the boat, and to create - not just more space - but more more diverse types of spaces for people to enjoy themselves and each other in different ways: collectively, in small groups, and in solitude as desired.
The iconic double-reverse-angled superstructure, reminiscent of commercial ships and explorers, presents an innovative structural architecture which is inherently stiffer due to the triangulated, flying buttress elements anchoring all four corners. This same arrangement allows more interior space in the House, and more exterior space on the Flybridge.
CL Yachts has great expertise in composite construction to achieve rigid but lightweight structures. With CLX96 new techniques were developed to achieve unprecedented visibility emphasising thin but strong columns, large windows, and transformable, multifunctional spaces. From every point within Main Deck guests can see virtually uninterrupted 360° views; side-side, and fore-aft. This is possible due to the open, loft-like plan as well as the unusually narrow columns achieved.
The flybridge Pilot House is designed for safe, secure, comfortable operation in all weather conditions. The innovative side and aft windows are electrically operated to transform this luxurious Skylounge from fully open to weather-tight. This all-weather arrangement permits the use of a single helm, freeing the Main Deck for even more space to be enjoyed by guests.
At the boat’s stern on the expansive Transom deck a large, transformable Z-lift platform allows for safe and easy deployment of tenders, jet skis, and other water toys. Lowered partially into the water, the same platform creates a stable, beach-like arrangement with integrated stairs; increasing the fun close to the water for bathers and sun lovers.
At the bow, an expansive sun lounge with adjustable beds transforms to an innovative cocktail lounge in-the-round; transforming collective moments and memories.
On the Lower Deck Staterooms, the flow of nature follows you throughout these volumes seamlessly sculpted from daylight, gently curved wood, and a combination of natural and high-tech materials.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: With a long history using state or the art composites, the shipyard has a well earned reputation for building strong, lightweight, high performing, seaworthy craft. The unique design of CLX96 represented new challenges that required new building techniques and solutions which will be leveraged into future designs. All wood, stone, and Corian elements are made with honeycomb and foam-cored construction, combining performance, stiffness and lightweight efficiency with unprecedented luxury experiences.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The client challenged us to rethink yacht design and yachting experiences from the ground up. Growing up with a love for boats and the sea, but having never designed a yacht before, I approached the project with the eyes of a child and an outsider’s imagination.
However, beyond pure intuition and vision, our design process follows a model of Cross-Fertilization combining creative ideation and critical and analytical research. Our extensive research into any new targeted area includes benchmarking historical, technical, and socio-cultural milestones and trends to understand direct and indirect influences, allowing us to quickly identify - as well as invent - innovation opportunities with a fresh, original, but - importantly - expert perspective.
Additionally, our studio’s ongoing research into new materials and manufacturing techniques, and well as extensive knowledge into state-of-the-art interactive digital technologies, informs our thinking and vision in ways that inform and excite us to create new ideas and approaches.
For CLX96, collectively thousands of hours were spent touring, sailing, and living on boats, visiting yacht shows and shipyards, interviewing yacht owners, their captains and crews.
CHALLENGE: This is an honest design. A sincere way of approaching problems in new ways and developing a new language based on an original vision. The bold profile and iconic design is the result of a holistic, First Principles re-thinking of yacht design. From the double-reverse angle House - more interior volume and exterior spaces with increased overall strength and rigidity - to the Plumb Bow semi-planing hull - enhanced volume with exceptional performance and seaworthiness - the unique overall design results from an integrated way of synthesizing problem solving into a new, original, unified whole. Everything on this boat - inside and out - has multiple functions, rather than trying to be different for its own sake, and is connected to a higher vision and way of thinking
