PRIMARY FUNCTION: Product Packaging
INSPIRATION: The design was inspired by the heartwarming scenario of family laundry and the functional properties of the in-wash scent booster. In a bid to stand out from the common packaging on the market, the designer has made a great leap in designing. The concept of the design focuses on the emotional part and the clean appearance is an embodiment of a peaceful mind feeling, which is popular among young families.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The packaging of the in-wash scent booster is in the shape of a garment, symbolizing the care of the family. Only at first glance, consumers will grasp the function of the product. The attractive white packaging gives out a sense of affinity, mirroring the product’s ability to bestow people’s clothes with faint scent. Also, the design is highly portable, catering to the needs of daily uses.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The range of this booster comes in four fragrances, which can be differentiated by white capsules and different colors. The colour of the ribbon and lettering is matched to the colour of the balls so that users can identify the fragrance of the product by the colour. The cap can be used as a measuring cup, with a capacity of approximately 15 grams per cap, allowing users to determine the amount to be used according to their personal preference.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The packaging began to be designed in Jiaxing, China in February 2020, and the design was completed and launched in April 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The packaging is made of environmental-friendly HDPE, which feels like wax and allows girls to easily unscrew the cap. The making process is not complicated, though, the packing is airtight and opaque to prevent the aroma from evaporating under light and extend the shelf life. The bottle size is based on the volume to avoid over-packaging and control costs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The product is aimed at young people, and the packaging design should conform to the aesthetic style of young people. After a lot of market research, designers found that contemporary young people like to pursue interesting lifestyles and simple aesthetics. Therefore, the design breaks the common packaging styles on the market, and the overall design is more concise and interesting. It shifts from focusing on market consistency to respecting the aesthetic standards and personal needs of young people.
CHALLENGE: The design was challenged by two aspects:
First, whether holding the packaging can be comfortable or not. The designer first made a prototype on the basis of his initial design, only to find that he failed to consider the comfort of holding. After continuously revising the design and making prototypes, the current version is the most comfortable one for users to hold.
Second, the material of the packaging, which is particularly important due to its specific shape. The designer made a comparison of prototypes and eventually chose to use HDPE material on the perspective of environmental protection and aesthetics.
