DESIGN NAME: Ziina
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Digital Wallet Mobile App
INSPIRATION: Sending and receiving money online is not an easy task in Dubai. Current solutions require exchanging IBANs and SWIFT codes and take up to 3 days to complete payments.
Ziina’s team conducted extensive research to come up with a novel and user-centric solution to this problem. Ziina's design is inspired by the local culture and architecture, while still being cutting-edge and technologically advanced.
It is a tech product that bridges finance and art.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ziina is a digital wallet for the Middle East. The Ziina team set out to design a beautiful yet simple product that brings instant payments to the region.
Ziina is meant to be social and is built around the network effect. Its full potential is unlocked when a person’s close circle of friends is onboarded and starts sending payments to each other.
The product is designed to bring delight and be a vehicle for people to share their joy with the people closest to them. We designed unique 3D illustrations for the product, featured at the most crucial touchpoints such as onboarding, success states, etc.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The content of the app is grouped into 3 sections based on core actions for ease of use.
The “Home” tab highlights recent content and transaction history
The “Pay” tab shows a list of contacts along with all incoming payment requests
The “Receive” tab allows the user to send requests, display a personal QR code, or share a personal payment link.
For payments, the app uses a person-first approach which was proven as the most intuitive during user tests.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 2020—2021 Dubai.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We built the new Ziina app for both iOS & Android platforms and designed it with accessibility in mind.
We moved frequent interaction elements closer to the bottom of the screen to allow for easier single-hand use.
We designed the typography of the app to have a 15 pt minimum size for body text and an accessible contrast ratio.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The app was built in-house with a lot of preliminary user research and user testing.
1. Need-finding interviews to understand users and their pain points.
2. Concepts-testing phase with target segments to tackle the surfaced opportunities and pain-points.
3. Online payment mental model research
4. Designing a North Star experience to see how an ideal product would come together.
5. User-testing the product to streamline the experience and validate the hypotheses.
CHALLENGE: There are a lot of taboos around the handling of money in the region.
Often it’s not appropriate to discuss finances, remind other people of debts, and so on.
One of the challenges we faced was designing an experience that opens the door for talking about money. Through Ziina, we aim to tackle the cultural barriers around money.
Bringing social features to a finance app and allowing users to include GIFs in their transaction messages helps remove the awkwardness from financial interactions.
