DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Yamadera

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hotel Suite

INSPIRATION:
Yamadera meaning Mountain Temple in Japanese. As the heart of Hotel Yamagata Kaku Jiaoxi Taiwan, the exclusive Yamadera suite was named after the symbolic Mountain Temple in Yamagata Japan to deliver the main philosophy of the hotel(sister hotel of Yamagata Prefecture). “A threshold access to inner world Explore the deepest beauty of your mind Cave within cave Layer after layer Finding the light of your life”

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Yamadera Suite of Hotel Yamagata Kaku is aiming to transport guest remotely by creating a nature-like enclosing environment and monotone materials. Layers of Arch elements neatly divided suite into three sections: Foyer/Resting/Bathing, based on the nature of the suite program. The compact spatial organization also solves the size limitation of the space. Low chromatic tone creates a sense of solitude and yet archly surrounding provides embraced intimacy, fulfill the need of five senses.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Cave-like resting/sleeping area forms an enclosed space, an isolated space to enjoy solitude. A small concave space inter-mediating the foyer and bedding area is an abstract shrine to paint a sacred tone to space

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2017 and finished in Feb 2019 in Jiaoxi, Taiwan

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Wall coating materials are selected to create unique sense of nature. In sleeping area, diatomaceous earth are mixed into wall coating, adjust the humidity of room with hot spring tub. In Bathing area, water-proof mineral paints are employed to give out caving earthy tone with water proofing function

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Suite Area: 30 sqm

TAGS:
Hotel, Yamadera, Taiwan

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The coherency to interpreted Japanese historical and geographic background into design details are the primary task of designing this suite. For example, we embed the abstract of pilgrimage path (In order to reach to the Mountain Temple in Yamagata Japan, people need to climb up 1015 steps along the mountain path) on the headboard, by flipping through the folding fabric steps on headboard, guest virtually climb up to their mountain temple in heart. We use shimmering thread to embroider the image of Mountain Temple at the end of path, so it will be only visible when you are up and closed to the top. Shimmering embroidery hints the temple never dimmed.

CHALLENGE:
With the size limitation of the room (30 sqm.), how to create an isolate hot spring area and yet guest can also feel like being in wide open nature. A room can purify the mind physically and psychologically.
