DESIGN NAME: Balestra
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Table
INSPIRATION: The concept was inspired by the idea of creating a multifunctional tea table for lounge zones and living rooms which would correspond to contemporary functional needs, higher level of comfort and sustainable design trends. This table is a homage to all Italian furniture masters. Swift lines, smooth curves and airy construction convey all the expression and elegance of Italian modernism.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The basis of the functional innovation of the table is a comprehensive rest of a person in the process of sitting (on a sofa/armchair). This is achieved by placing and relaxing legs on specially designed pads of the table, which, in turn, reduce the load on the cardiovascular and muscular systems of the body, as well as on the spine.
The extra comfort is provided by small shelf at reach of hand where useful items such as smartphone, TV-remote or eyeglasses can be placed without leaning forward.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table has no moving parts and does not require transformations for multifunctional use. It is installed with the rear leg close to the sofa. The person goes to the side of the table, sits on the sofa, leans back and rests his/her feet on one of the soft pads. Without leaning forward, he/she can reach objects on the tabletop, for example, take or put a glass of water, a book or TV remote. At the same time, unused items, such as a smartphone or keys, can be placed on a shelf under the table top and stay at the reach of a hand. Another person can perform same actions on the other side of the table.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2020 and finished in December 2020 in Veliky Novgorod

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Some people need to rest during the day and unconsciously put their feet on the table to reduce the load on the circulatory system.
Modern tables are not adapted for this, poufs and ottomans are not functional enough and take up extra space. All this prompted the creation of a new type of furniture – paddy tables that help to solve the problem of rest, interior space and the necessary functionality.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create new functional and ergonomic structure with harmonious midcentury appearance. In addition to performing multiple functions it had to look solid and light and be durable at the same time. One of the solutions was to use metal stretchers for structural rigidity which made finally design look like crossbow and determined its' name (in Italian).
