DESIGN NAME: Design a Spoon to Change the City
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book
INSPIRATION: Based on an idea by Claudio Larcher. A group of Italian designers climbs up toward the peak of a mountain. Their destination is the Taramelli lodge, at an altitude of 6,712 feet, in the heart of the Dolomites. The purpose of the trip is to try to think about current themes having to do with contemporary design: challenges, new scenarios, problems, changes in models, markets, and scales. From the real city to the digital one, from the value of the given to that of the object.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "Designing a Spoon to Change the City" wondering what the role of the designer will be in the future and how today's designer can design the world of tomorrow, includes, in a final dialogue with Italo Rota, the thoughts arising from the situation of collective self-isolation experienced during the lockdown for Covid-19, a social, cultural and economic "change" that awaits the designers to lay the foundations for a new creativity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The book offers reflections and open discussions on issues related to contemporary design: challenges, new scenarios, difficulties, paradigm, market and scale changes; from the real city to the digital one, from the value of the data that surpasses that of the object in an attempt to define what contemporary design is today.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: "Designing a spoon to change the city" was born from an idea by Claudio Larcher that involved a group of Italian designers on a journey to the Taramelli refuge, at 2046 meters, in the heart of the Dolomites. Starting from the 1952 quote by Ernesto Nathan Rogers "from the spoon to the city", who believes it is possible to tackle everything with architectural design, the authors overturn the concept in "from the city to the spoon": the small acting on the large, the reduced scale which affects the grand scale.
