| DESIGN NAME: Self Service Checkout PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sco INSPIRATION: The main vision of self-checkout was to create a timeless design with elegant and clear lines to fulfill the space it would be placed in. The main inspiration was to create a user-friendly product for a shopper of any age that requires no experience for beginners and is pleasant for frequent users. As a result fewer attendant tasks and increased checkout speed by 20% lead to increased sales, boost loyalty and result in a higher rate of customer satisfaction. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The new self-service checkouts are user-friendly, modern and visually light. Design is thought through till the smallest detail. The edges of the self-service checkouts have integrated innovative LED lighting, which attracts the attention of customers and informs about the status. Improved ergonomics make it easier for customers to complete payment transactions. An extra shelf at the front allows to store personal belongings safely while products are being scanned and payment is being made. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Modular system of the product allows to place checkout bagging solution according to the flow of the shoppers in the store. Improved ergonomics of the self-checkout are enhanced for daily usage. Additional shelf in the front helps to hold personal belongings while scanning products or during payout. Height of the surfaces are aligned according to the universal design principles suitable for wide range of people. Status LED illumination helps the attendant to assist shoppers in an efficient way. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 2015: First ideas and industrial design sketches. 2016: Scale models, digital sketches, 3D renders and rough prototype. 2017: First manufactured product exhibited at EUROSHOP. 2018: First industrially produced series of pilots and implementation in Estonia "Rimi". 2019: Mass production and release into different markets. 2020: New locations were opened in Lithuania, Poland, Malta and other countries and self-checkout exhibited as a part of Lithuanian design week at one of "Rimi" stores. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product is made out of stainless steel sheets using metal bend and welding technologies. The LED light-guide parts are made of milled polyethylene. While screen, printer and card readers are being held by adjustable steel arms. Weight check area could be made with transparent polycarbonate box with rounded edges or thin steel strype across the edges of the area. Product could be personalized according to the color scheme of the brand. The main goal of self-checkout design was user-centered approach to fit different people for using the product on a daily basis. Holistic approach was the core of the design-driven process as well as the inter flow of software and hardware. CHALLENGE: The goal was to create unique modern and timeless self-service checkout. The main challenging part was to create unobtrusive LED traffic lights integration with 45 degree angle light guides visible from all sides and curved at the front. The next challenging part was manufacturing of the smooth radius of bended stainless steel at the front top part.
