DESIGN NAME: Trinity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Street Furniture
INSPIRATION: A world where people living in the city together with other natural creatures that respect, love and support each other and meet their needs was imagined. In this design, Trinity represents the triple part of a world consisting of adults, children and animals. A quarter of a circle is designed with three sitting units, and the relationship between adult, child and animal areas is established. It was thought that this world could be completed in a circular form by reproducing the modules.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Trinity unit enables adults and children to rest, provides shelter for animals, allows them to play with shadow, drink water and eat food. Unlike existing street furniture, Trinity is sustainable due to the modularity and durability of the units, easily cleanable and establishes close relationships with animals. The circular form and organization of the seating unit provides sitting both in and out of the circle, and allows people to communicate with each other or keep their social distance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Trinity enables adults, children and animals to be together. Adults and children can sit and rest in units that are suitable for their height. Shelters are provided for animals under the seating units in which they can go in and out from either side of the seating units. Children can use the low iron seats, which are appropriate for their height, and give water and food to animals. When the sun is shining, they can play with the shadows of the iron material altogether.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea of designing the project started in October 2019 in Ankara, Turkey. The drawings of the project were exhibited in the Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards exhibition in November 2019 at Istanbul Lutfi Kirdar International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Concrete and iron mesh were chosen for their durability, cleanliness and reproducibility. The reason why iron is designed with spaces is to allow children and animals to play together with the shadows created by the sun. Concrete seating units for adults and the spaces under them were designed for the animals to shelter in winter. The low iron seats for the children were conceived to approach the animals and feed them. Easy-to-clean water or food bowls are designed in their access dimensions.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The concrete and iron mesh sitting units designed for adults are 56 cm in diameter, 75 cm in base diameter and, 45 cm in height. The entrance for animals has a radius 26 cm.
The iron seating unit designed for children to sit is 72 cm. in length, 45 cm in width and, 22.5 cm in height.
The diameter of water bowl for animals is 33 cm.
The length (radius) from the center of the circular organization to the center of the concrete seating unit is 185 cm. The diameter should be 370 cm. for a full circle to be completed with modules.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Adults, children and animal relationship were researched in the design of the street furniture. A new world with environment friendly materials for the shelter of animals is created. Seating units are designed with concrete and iron for people and animals. Bowls are designed to collect rain and snow. Iron mesh is considered for animals and children to play with shadows. For seasonal differences, the materials are designed in solid and void surfaces. Different alternatives are designed for socialization.
CHALLENGE: With today’s technology it is possible to design the proposed seating unit. After production and transportation, it will be ready for use by placing it in place and assembling the binding elements. A backrest is not designed for short term sitting to respect the living space of the animals. The challenge in this design is to get animals closer to humans without scaring them. It was difficult to provide people and animals both together and apart.
