| DESIGN NAME: 24 Frames of Lightwell PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rebirth Experiential Retail Store INSPIRATION: Currently most of the implemented plans for urban regeneration and development in Taipei are being carried out by reconstruction. The newly built tall walls block the surrounding environment and cut off the urban fabric. In contrast, this project offers another solution to walkup-apartments renovation with minimal environmental impacts, which is to create the "24 frames" as a framework of the space allowing client to integrate various fields together perfectly in a 50-year-old building. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "24 Frames of Lightwell" is an experiential space bringing commerce, fashion, art, and nature together in a renovated 50-year-old building in Taipei. The project offers solutions to old walkup-apartment renovation through material selection and subtractive design operation with minimal environmental impacts. The lightweight approach is applied to the entire lightwell and facade for the creation of "24 Frames" that influence the interior environment and magnify how visitors sense the surroundings OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Through the "24 frames", playful interactions are created among surroundings, visitors and the artworks. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In terms of material selection for generating a newborn atmosphere in the old building, the project uses reinterpretation of the existing material to highlight the texture of the old building. For instance, "modern terrazzo panels" are used in the select shop while the existing "terrazzo staircase" are restored by oil-painting. The biggest challenge during construction is to figure out the restoration method since the building was built in 1967 and many material and technique was lost. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 353 m2 of the space area TAGS: rebirth, renovation, old building, experiential retail, retail, select shop, gallery, lightwell, frames, taipei RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: As the project aiming to conserve the urban fabric and offer potential renovation solutions, the biggest challenge during construction is to figure out the restoration method since the building was originally built in 1967. For instance, "Goose yellow terrazzo staircase", "scattered wood-patterned concrete ceiling", "neon green mini tiles" are common building materials and techniques in 60’s- 80’s in Taiwan as well as the housing typology of "walk-up apartment", but cannot be found nowadays. NAME: Lightwell PROFILE: Located in the central business district of Taipei, LIGHTWELL is the first concept store that combines a fashion select shop with art galleries in Taiwan. With almost three years of preparation and gathered designers, architects, and artists from Taiwan and overseas to collaborate, the place finally launched in May 2020. The goal is to motivate and inspire customers to appreciate fashion and art in their daily lives, and to open more opportunities for cultural communication between Taiwan and abroad. |
