Green Light Forest

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Ecology Exhibition

INSPIRATION:
The original architecture design mimic the nature mountain shape and create distinct triangular interior realm for exhibition, they convert the traditional myths and legend of local culture Fairy Ribbon idea into a zigzag three-dimensional shape to flow through the space in order to work perfectly with triangular building shape and provide visitors with mysterious and aesthetic spatial experience. They divide four exhibition topic into four different colors; the red ribbon starting from the entrance landscape and the welcome words under different language embrace visitors with hospitality. The green area start to let people understand the formation of the forest and the local animal and vegetation habitat dominated in the National Park. The blue area they start introducing the stone cave, mountain wetland and many special geological preservation scenery. Lastly, the yellow area remind visitors the problems of climate change and educate people the important the nature preservation.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Located above 2000 meters elevation of South Western China Mountain Area, Fairy Mountain Forest Ecology Exhibition Hall is not only a natural ecology museum with fully functional tourist center, but also a nature educational hub that take more than 30,000 visitors per month. The Exhibition Hall is the showcase of the high elevation nature ecology of South Western China with five distinct themes; Firstly, the formations of forest. Secondly, habitat in the National Park. Thirdly, the special geology feature in the vicinity. Finally, how to protect our environment? By introducing four different color for each themes, the visitors start to understand the origins of forest, endanger species, vegetation colonies, stone cave, and mountain wetland. The purpose of the tour is to remind people the ecology preservation and provide opportunities for student to embrace the nature.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
They creatively enhance the visiting experience with floor display, window comic over fir tree scenery, laser projector with seasonal changes on wall to create interactive pleasure for children’s nature educational process. Beside the classroom and multi-purpose area provide flexibility for additional exhibition, cafe workshop and enlargeable lecture space for visitors. The project not only show case the value of forest habitat but also provide the sustainable educational opportunities to general public.

Design: December 2017- December 2019 Construction: December 2019 - October 2020 Location: Fairy Mountain National Park, Wulong, Chongqing, China

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Firstly, the cantilever exhibition element from ceiling: because the limit of space, they take the strategy to cantilever the exhibition elements from the ceiling in order to provide enough space for visitors to walk in the center and create interesting viewing experience at the same time. Secondly, they introducing high technology exhibition: Integration of laser printer, led display and interactive sensor, they start to provide new exhibition experience for the visitors and provide flexibility for exhibition content to change. Thirdly, the crystal membranes treatment: they take advantage of new material on the facade of the cantilever elements. The membranes is made of PVC that can be print out through large printer and be manufacture in the factory. Each of design module is fabricate in the factory and assemble on site. The material not only enhance the quality of the design outcome but also economic for construction cost.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Site is located at 2000 meters above the sea level in the South Western China National park, Wulong Fairy Mountain, Chongqing. The exhibition space is a two stories newly build architecture with the interior space about 900 square meters with the height difference from 7-11 meters. Exhibition space divides into four themes and have the multi-purpose lecture room, and handcraft cafe, a management desk and toilet.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
About the research background: Fairy Mountain National Park is looking for a design for exhibition center for visitors to better understand the forest ecology and the preservation of nature resource. The architect mimic the mountain shape and create a triangular interior which create distinct interior character and at the same time provide both opportunities and challenge for exhibition designer to explore a creative yet suitable exhibition space for The National Park. The design methods: The case study of related projects for idea collection. The technology research to search for up-do-date strategy to provide flexible yet modern exhibition solution. Design tools: Through physical modeling, 3D modeling and 3D printing for exhibition study. Through new technology research, they start to introducing laser projector, led screen and interactive sensor for more creative exhibition experience. The participants of this project included architect, exhibition designer, Interior designer, lighting designer, design content consultant, exhibition planner, physical 3D model team, 3D digital model team, 3D printer team, construction team, soft decoration design team. The design results: With the team collaboration and effort, they are able to execute a creative yet interactive exhibition center and enhance the visitors experience with new technology and comfortable experience to under the knowledge of nature ecology. for the insights: By introducing the triangular flowing fairy ribbon into the space to create a flowing and cantilever elements from the ceiling, it is surely a prototype for similar formation of exhibition space. With the introduction of new technology, like laser projector, led screen and sensor into the design, they create an example for future exhibition design study in the area.

CHALLENGE:
Firstly, the flowing design element fit the architecture interior. The architecture’s tilt roof looks good in the National Park but it create a challenge for interior exhibition. They take innovative and creative design solution to create ribbon to enhance the diversity of exhibition and make visitor a viewing experience like no others. Secondly, fairy’s ribbon story from local legend enhance the culture value and its branding. The architecture design is to mimic the mountain shape and interior ribbon echo the local fairy tale culture challenge. The design solution reinforce the identity of its context and enhance the branding effect of design. Thirdly, the introduction of high-tech exhibition provide flexibility for future design content changes. Because the exhibition space is limit and have lot of constraint, they survey the modern technology to integrate into the design and make it possible for future content changes.
