PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Controllable Hydro Reactive

INSPIRATION:
The Controllable Hydro-Reactive Magnesium Alloy leverages the metabolizable and non-toxic properties of magnesium, zinc, and calcium to alter the entropy values of the alloy, thus allowing precise control of the alloy's degradation rate based on its application, and thereby improving its stability and mechanical properties. And this technology has been applied to develop the first single-use magnesium alloy hemostatic clip that can be broken down and absorbed into the human body.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
By modifying the mixing entropy value of the alloy, Controllable Hydro-Reactive Magnesium Alloy breaks through the controllability that cannot be accomplished by the existing technology and improves the poor corrosion resistance of the traditional magnesium alloy. It can replace the traditional magnesium alloy with aluminum, tin, rare earths, and other elements that threaten human health, and achieve the purpose of alloy design by strengthening the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the alloy itself, as well as uniform and controlled degradation.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Controllable Hydro-Reactive Magnesium Alloy is safe for biomedical applications, has human affinity and biodegradability, and can help patients stimulate bone cell activity, resist the corrosive effect of body fluids, and eliminate the Stress Shielding Effect. No additional surface treatment is required to slow down the degradation rate, which can reduce the product manufacturing cost by more than 20%.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2019 in Taiwan and finished in November 2020 in Taiwan.The product has been recognized with several international awards, including the Red Dot Design Award in Germany, the Golden Pin Design Award in Taiwan, and The R&D 100 Awards in USA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Controllable Hydro-Reactive Magnesium Alloy is the world's first innovative material. The degradation rate of Mg-Zn-Ca alloy is precisely controlled to achieve a uniform and slow degradation until it is completely absorbed by the human body and can be completely discharged from the system with body fluids. Therefore, there is no need to remove it by a second surgery, thus eliminating the psychological and physical pain of the patient.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Currently, the Controllable Hydro-Reactive Magnesium Alloy has been launched in the market and cooperated with medical equipment manufacturers and medical institutions. Therefore, the development and design of the world's first Disposable Clip Applier of Controlling the Degradation Rate technology of Medical Magnesium Alloys that can be absorbed by the human body, which does not need to be removed after surgery and is gradually degraded through the material.

CHALLENGE:
The Controllable Hydro-Reactive Magnesium Alloy changes the entropy value of the alloy by selecting biocompatible magnesium-zinc-calcium elements, it provides the most suitable amount of hydrogen production and precisely controls the rate of hydrogen production without the concern of metabolite residues in the organism. Innovative materials and developments can be integrated seamlessly with current production processes.
