DESIGN NAME: Bungalow Refurbishment
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Living
INSPIRATION: The style is a simple elegance and sophisticated, which pleases the owners, as an expression of architectural responsibility in the design and execution with a claim to durability in form and materiality. Black, slate flooring in the interior and exterior and smoked oak parquet in the sleeping areas characterize the spatial impression. The aesthetic reduction of forms, materials and colors lead to a harmonious overall impression, which is underlined by a discreet color and lighting concept.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Architecturally, the goal was to break up the rooms into a new spatial structure, to create spaciousness and expanse within a fixed area and cubature, and to incorporate the outdoors into the living area. This was achieved by increasing the window areas. Glass blocks were replaced with new windows and parapets were partially opened to floor level to create smooth transitions from inside to outside. Doors and walls were removed and passageways were opened to floor level. A sauna was installed in the former tank room, and a pool was integrated into the garden.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The aesthetic reduction of forms, materials and colors lead to a harmonious overall impression, which is underlined by a discreet color and lighting concept. Small reminiscences as design breaks were deliberately used.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project startet in 2012 in Langen (Hessen) Germany and finished in 2016

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The construction task was to renovate a bungalow from the 1960s in terms of energy and transform it into the 21st century in terms of design. From the installation of a solar thermal system, the installation of a water-bearing stove for heating support to the photovoltaic system, the building was brought up to the state of the art. The rainwater infiltration is done via an infiltration trench.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 180 squaremeters living space
TAGS: Elegance, unobtrusive, minimal, reduced
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The challenge was to redesign an existing building in a way that preserved its character while allowing the new to emerge confidently yet harmoniously.
CHALLENGE: During the renovation of the bungalow, with an extremely unfavorable ratio between room volume and envelope area, it was important to integrate as many alternative forms of energy as possible when renewing the building services:
- Hybrid heating system with heating water tank in combination with solar thermal energy
- water-bearing stove
- photovoltaic system
- underfloor heating and re-dimensioning of radiators
- new windows and doors
- infiltration trench for rainwater infiltration
- solar heating system for the new outdoor pool
