DESIGN NAME: EverDesk
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Kids Desk
INSPIRATION: Undoubtedly the inspiration for EverDesk came from an old school desk. But it is more than just a homage to this universally understood archetype. It is a modern version designed with clever upgrades to breathe new life into a piece of furniture that has long been forgotten.
The inspiration was originally sparked while using a vintage school desk as a designated kid's corner in my dining room. Beyond the fact that it was aesthetically pleasing, it created a "room within a room" as the table and the desk was attached to form an integrated unit.
Gradually, I observed how this piece of furniture became the centerpiece for my kids in my home. The desk was designed to be elevated so when I turned the desk to face the center of the room, the kids gained a new perspective and loved the experience. Grabbing a chair, I could easily sit next to them at eye level, and instantly become part of their world. Furthermore, it was adjustable and could accommodate my growing children.
Everything I learned and experienced over the years motivated me to design and provide families with a stylish ‘kids corner.’ Not only did I want to modernize it, but I also wanted to improve the functionality, durability, and longevity of the desk. EverDesk is the result of that quest.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: EverDesk is a modern, stylish upgrade of the school desk archetype suitable for kids of all ages. It is consciously designed higher to provide eye-level contact with adults. It is ergonomic thanks to a robust, yet easy-to-use mechanical adjustment system that offers multiple heights, desktop, and foot support settings. The tabletop is also reversible to cater to both left-handed and right-handed children and can be set horizontally, or at an angle depending on the activity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Ergonomically designed to seat children of all ages. Adjusting the seat automatically adjusts the backrest due to the 'S' shaped arms of the backrest. The inner side of the armrests has a groove with 8 slots to adjust the seat to the required height. It is secured by threaded oak knobs. The footrest is secured by 6 possible settings by a cutout integrated into the table and seat legs. The tabletop can be placed horizontally and at an angle and is reversible to fit left and right-handed users.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: EverDesk is a truly European product from start to finish. The idea originated in Vienna and was conceived in 2010 by Eszter Papp, a Hungarian interior designer. It took some iterations and research and finally was taken from concept to design in 2019 in collaboration with two Dutch designers, Marc Th. van der Voorn and Koen Koevoets. The product is manufactured in Hungary under the skilled hands of Hungarian craftsman and released at the end of 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To achieve the highest level of precision, EverDesk is computer designed and built by the hands of traditional craftsmen. It is crafted using environmentally sustainable oak and is 100% FSC certified. Combining solid wood pieces and plywood providing uniform strength and pliability to create stylish, slim, and elegant lines. High-quality, child-safe, stain, and scratch resistant lacquer, increase durability while emphasizing the delicate structure and color of the oak.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: EverDesk is W 66 cm, H 83 cm, L 97 cm and 22 kg (net). It requires minimal assembly and is instantly ready to use. Delivered in four parts, it is ingeniously merged into a W 80 cm - D 60 cm - H 90 cm box, so 4 boxes fit seamlessly onto a Euro pallet. The upper and lower cardboard buffers hold EverDesk securely in the box, similar to how Tetris shapes connect. The packaging is recyclable and can be used to re-pack the design to facilitate returns, if and when required.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Extensive research of traditional desks was undertaken to determine which elements and shapes are key features of this archetype. Ergonomics and adjustability needed to accommodate a growing child were simulated by CAD which determined the grooves placed in the ’S’ shaped arms of the backrest. The research was conducted on the different types of finishing needed to ensure durability for even the most rambunctious children.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to enhance the traditional children's desk while preserving its unique and ingenious appearance. Our design challenge was to marry traditional joinery with the need for precision given several moving parts. CNC helped ensure perfect alignment and operational excellence. We were also challenged to build a product that was durable and safe while remaining sleek. Finally, we wanted a product requiring minimal assembly which could fit into the smallest box possible.
