| DESIGN NAME: SunWaves PRIMARY FUNCTION: Uv Sterilizer INSPIRATION: Looking at the current difficult situation in the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought that I should find an idea that can help people enjoy a daily gesture such as drinking a coffee or tea. My idea is a professional tool that reduce the bacterial load present on surfaces such as a cups, saucers, etc. Even after normal washing, the surfaces retain a bacterial load that cannot be extinguished with common methods. This tool is able to eliminate molds, germs, bacteria and viruses in a few seconds. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SunWaves is a professional surface sterilizer able to eliminate 99.9% of germs, molds, bacteria and viruses in 8 seconds. A tool designed to break down the bacterial load present on surfaces such as coffee cups, tea cups, saucers, etc. This product can be exposed to the public because it is equipped with protection system from UV-C light. By sanitizing surfaces such as coffee cups, the consumption of disposable products is reduced and therefore the use of paper and plastic is reduced. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The machine is very simple to use, once turned on by the ON / OFF button on the back, it is sufficient: open the drawer; insert an object inside (cups, saucers, etc.); wait 8 seconds; when the green LED turns it on, sanitized items can be taken. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2020, and has been in production since September 2020. SunWaves is a made in Italy product. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The tool is made of satin stainless steel and opaque plexiglass (black or white) in the external components, while inside it is composed of a mirror stainless steel drawer (to create a reflection chamber) that slides on soft closing trolleys . It features a timer that turns on a green LED after 8 seconds to indicate that the sterilization cycle is complete. The heart of the project is a UV-C light which has the germicidal function. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The machine measures: Width 300 mm x Depth 300 mm x Height 300 mm, while the internal drawer measures: Width 230 mm x Depth 230 mm x Height 200 mm. SunWaves encloses a double protection system in the drawer: the front flaps cover the light when the drawer is open, the rear flap acts as a "cap" for the light, so that the user of the tool does not come into contact with the light. The goal was to allow people to consume a drink in maximum safety from bacteria, germs and viruses. After the first lockdown in Italy, I saw people with the fear of drinking coffee in a cup, therefore the use of disposable materials was very frequent. I understood that the project, in addition to sterilizing, also had an important role in the environmental impact. This prompted me to make SunWaves. CHALLENGE: The most difficult challenge was to create a UV-C light protection system. It was necessary to study well how to protect eyes and hands from direct light radiation. The system had to be mechanical and not electrical, because through a continuous start and stop of the light, the light itself would have a shorter duration, and therefore the use of too many lamps during the year.
