DESIGN NAME: Triobags
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Urban Multifunctional Backpack
INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from the experience of carrying multiple bags for work and travelling daily. Bringing a laptop, delicious homemade nutritious food and running/gym/work shoes with gym accessories inspired the team to develop this concept. This need emerges to maintain a healthy lifestyle within busy daily schedules. It was inconvenient to carry three separate bags for work, gym, and food simultaneously and financially not efficient.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Triobags is a multifunctional backpack, that consists of two separable bags called Work Backpack and Active Backpack. Work Backpack has 15” laptop compartment, electronic tablet sleeve and spare spaces for charger, and other workbooks. The Active Backpack has a detachable insulated Food Bag to keep the food and drink fresh up to 8 hours. The bag is
designed to carry gym accessories and trainer. The bag can also be used as a travel bag by removing insulated food bag to accommodate more space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The separable backpacks are connected through strong zipper when use as a one combined bag. The zipper is reversible, waterproof, and hidden in the bottom of the pack once fully zipped. The functional bag has easy access to the insulated food bag without the need of opening the backpack. There is a separation to integrate isolated food bag within this backpack. This bag can be easily disintegrated by simply removing internal partition using connective material to accommodate more spaces. These separable backpacks can be opened to 90 degrees to pack things comfortably.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2014 in Hertfordshire, England. Since then, the team have managed to develop the idea and created four different samples, and now, the team are on the verge of finalising the backpack for manufacturing sample. The current goal is to negotiate with a manufacturer for minimum production quantity and the cost before launching the crowdfunding campaign.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We worked with design thinking methodology:Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, applied in an iterative manner. We focused on creating a really high quality waterproof backpack using: 600 x 900D rPET recycled Waterproof material, we used Airmesh foam for the shoulder straps which are attached at a tested angle following the human body curves. Highly reflective piping material will protect our users in the night in case they want to cycle. Also the Food bag is InsulShine insulated material, We used special Elasticated adjustment to cover excessive straps
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 300 x 220 x 450 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the early stage of this project, the team researched into existing backpack market. The objectives of this research were to find the trend of backpacks and their features in similar niches. Market research had been done through focus group targeting within this product niche. Online Surveys were also used via Survey Monkey to get feedback. The survey feedback helped the team to establish the price, quality, and features of the product. A significant number of the participants focused on the quality of the backpack rather than the cost.
CHALLENGE: One of the challenges was to find a qualified manufacturer capable enough to transform
this concept design into a production sample. The biggest challenges in the design
stage were to connect two separable backpacks into one. This idea was a new concept,
and there was no backpack with a similar feature available for inspiration. Find a
reusable waterproof material was another challenge as not every manufacturer supplier
works with this type of material. During this stage, the communication was difficult with
the manufacturer due to be based outside the UK.
