| DESIGN NAME: Accordio PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pet House INSPIRATION: Accordio was first inspired by my niece's silicone bowl plate. I was intrigued by its flexibility and portability. After some research, I found that silicone also has a fascinating collapsible feature, which was later adopted into a foldable house. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Accordio is a design study about portable pet houses. The silicone pet house is light-weighted and collapsible as an accordion-like structure. It is easy to clean and carry during outdoor activities and travels. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This silicone house can be compressed in a 1/6 size by pushing both sides. A fabric cushion can be conveniently fit into the collapsed form for portability. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2020 in Calgary, Canada and finished in July 2020 in Banff, Canada. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Accordio is made with silicone. Each magnetic frame (a total of 8) is reinforced for structural stability. Once collapsed, these frames adhere each other and keep it compact and portable. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 714 mm (Height) x 593 mm (Length) x 705 mm (Depth) *Sizes may vary. TAGS: Pet House, Collapsible Pet House, Accordion House RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Accordio is a design study about portable pet houses. The design explores the use of silicone for pet housing. The light-weighted and safe nature of silicone provides many potentials for a portable pet house. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was how to keep accordio in a flattened shape when it is collapsed. Several ways were explored such as snap buttons, strap and etc. Amongst them, magnetic frames were chosen to be an ideal solution as they could provide structural stability as well as visual clarity.
