DESIGN NAME:
Gemdale Casa Oia
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sales Center
INSPIRATION:
The design takes inspiration from local environment and cultural context, and at the same time extracts unique elements of mountain and sea, thereby creating a poetic space that resonates with users.
The design abstracts flowing ripples on the sea, and incorporates the form of sea water into the space via the rich changes of light and shadows. Visitors are encouraged to capture the moments where water surface ripples and to think about changes in life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Nature endows all things with a changing form. The project adopts minimalist design languages to narrate the rolling form of sea waves and translates it into an art installation, which shows dramatic visual effects and seems to shack off the shackles of spatial boundary.
The imagination about mountain and sea is the design thread that runs through the entire space. Light shines on rocks, and is refracted and extended by glass.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The project takes nature as the design theme, and expresses the relationship between mountain and sea through design languages. The space mainly adopt black, white, gray and warm tones, and extracts various brilliant hues that the sea presents in different natural conditions. Stone-like artworks on the wall shows the transition and fusion of different blue shades, which create a visual highlight in the space and show layering and changes in an orderly manner.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in August 2019 and finished in September 2020 in Beihai, China.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The project is a property sales center located in Beihai, Guangxi, China. As one of the starting points of the Maritime Silk Road, Beihai has been witnessing the fusion and collision between Oriental and Western cultures, which add a sense of mystery to ancient roads.
CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge lay in material selection and how to achieve a lighting atmosphere that is ethereal and features rich layering.
