DESIGN NAME: National Museum of Qatar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Trade and Collector's Edition Books
INSPIRATION: The museum’s architecture is inspired by the desert rose and the book was designed to echo the characteristics of this natural phenomenon, to create an object that like the building seems to be emerging from the earth. The sandy coloured cover material also evokes the Old Palace, at the centre of the site, and the blind de-bossing replicates the cladding pattern of the discs on the new building.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A unique element of the book is the contrast between the subtle and calm exterior, inspired by the serenity of the desert, and the vivid inside pages, illustrated with striking photography of the soaring interlocking discs against the blue sky. The interior pages mirror the museum journey, punctuated by subtle pauses of pullout quotes with no loud chapter announcements, and photos throughout the book are condensed into series of ‘picture wells’, with minimal interruption, to create a seamless visual experience.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create a timeless yet contemporary publication, honouring the country’s heritage while portraying its openness to modernity and innovation. The books needed to capture the unique qualities of both buildings, the new museum and the historic palace, and that required a significant amount of research to find the appropriate materials and to realise the vision.
