| DESIGN NAME: Sankao PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table INSPIRATION: Nature is my main source of inspiration. Living organisms, cell growth and concepts such as the evolution of species are crucial in understanding the design of objects related to their function over time. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sankao coffee table, meaning "three faces" in japanese, is an elegant, daring and cutting edge piece of furniture. It is based on an evolutionary concept of pure geometries, which grow and develop as a living being until they manage to adapt to an environment and a function. This is created through simple transformations, giving meaning to it's own being. The choice of material had to be a living material, with its own unique DNA and footprints: this material could only be solid wood. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sankao interacts with the observer in a natural way. The human eye is more used to curved lines and surfaces, they have always been present in nature, they surround us. That instinct lingers in our animal subconscious, and the soft, natural forms give us tranquility and pleasure. Its attractive shape, together with the warmth of the material, makes the user to come closer, to touch it, to sit next to it. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2018 in Madrid and finished in September 2018 in Madrid. It has won several awards including Gold Winner Muse Design Awards 2020, New York, Golden Award Novum Design Award 2020, France, and Honorable Mention - European Product Design Award, ePDA 2020. It was exhibited in Paris Design Week 2020: Maison & Objet Digital Fair, from 4 - 18th of September 2020. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The construction and manufacturing process equally combines technology and craftsmanship. The planks of Iroko solid wood are machined three-dimensionally using a 5 axis CNC milling router (numerical control), following a 3D drawing. Once the pieces are machined, these are glued and assembled one another by wood artisans obtaining the final shape, giving life to the object. Also, the design is eco-friendly, every piece is crafted from the finest hardwood; hand-selected and sourced from certified, sustainable sources. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1200mm x Depth 1200mm x Height 420mm TAGS: wooden furniture, coffee table, wood, modern furniture, exclussive furniture, table RESEARCH ABSTRACT: When facing a new creation, I always have nature and living forms as an inspiration. Every curve and surface present in living beings have a biological explanation related to a certain function over time, and these evolutionary changes and transformations are what I find especially inspiring. My work trys to emulate this natural process, subjecting pure geometries to certain tensions, obtaining new living forms that fit a specific use. CHALLENGE: From the technical and execution point of view, Sankao Coffee Table has become a major challenge due to the complexity of its geometry. By means of CNC machining it is possible to realize any type of surface with relative technical ease, but to be able to realize the three main gaps where books are housed turned out a real challenge.
