PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stool
INSPIRATION: Industrial bar stools with a similar design always offer the same height adjustment method: A gear and a gear hub, mostly made of metal materials. Although working perfectly, this system is pretty uninspired. Our initial thought was that it was possible to come up with something fresh and equally functional. We said, This system can work in another way. Then we proved our point with the unprecedented design of Burgu. We redesigned the height adjustment system and updated the form of the seat with a more ergonomic form. Thus, the user can simply adjust the height of the stool while sitting comfortably.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Instead of a single centre hub, the bearing part of the height adjustment gear is supported by four separate legs. The absence of a gear hub gives visibility and a certain aesthetic appeal to the entire height adjustment gear.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Burgu differs from other functional stools with its large gear diameter and thick thread that allows the user to adjust height in a fast but steady manner. Therefore, adjusting the seat to desired height requires significantly less effort and up-and-down movement.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design process took 3 months. The product was presented in Ankara, Turkey in January 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Burgu brings together natural materials and cutting edge production technologies. The seat and height adjustment gear are made of laminated solid wood. Lamination prevents deformation and extends the product s life.
The height adjustment gear and four legs of the stool are produced using 5 axis CNC machines which offered increased precision.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Stools have gained a staple status throughout the history due to their functionality. Especially in the 19th century, many metal production factory workers would sit on stools to increase their efficiency.
Even today, stools are essential items for many professions eg. dentists, barbers and so forth, due to their light weight along with compact and functional design. Since they don’t take up much space, they are easy to store. They are always ready for use and very quick to put back away. As the designer, I was very intrigued by this simple and popular everyday item. That is why I did an extensive research on the history and functionality of the stools, which then motivated me to design an aesthetic, comfortable, inviting and user friendly stool that can complement a wide range of different spaces, from bars to barber shops. The final product was both satisfying and exciting for me.
CHALLENGE: After completing the design process, the biggest challenge was realizing the height adjustment gear: Each leg of the stool has to have different thread slots where the auger would rotate smoothly. Producing different thread slots for each leg was not very easy.
