DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
One-Two-One

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Glass Container

INSPIRATION:
2.4 million tons of recycled glass are used annually. Impurities such as metals, rubbers and plastics must be removed during the sorting process which consumes huge amounts of electricity and manpower. Food container is the one needs to be sorted from other materials the most, because they consist of at least two different materials to make glass be sealed to keep food fresh. My design does not use any other materials except glass to form a confined space suitable for food storage.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a glass container for home use. It consists of two parts, and both parts are made of glass. This container does not use any other materials except glass and water to form a confined space for food storage. There is a water channel on the edge of the glass, and that is the place to make water seal work. Using single material saves energy by reducing manufacturing steps and reduces the energy consumed during the glass sorting process.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
There is a water channel on the edge of the glass, and this is the place to make water seal work. In general, the steps are: pour water on the water channel, put food in the container and then put the lid on. That’s it! In detail, I set the handle near the edge of the lid instead of in the center. Why? Imagine a whole table of water, and there are two lids with different position of the handle on the table (one handle on the center, another one near the edge). It is easier to lift up the lid with the handle near the edge.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This Project started in September 2019 in Sweden and was exhibited in Stockholm Furniture Fair and Malmo Design Center in 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
3D print to get the positive mold - Use it to make a native plaster mold – Blow glass

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
170mm x 170mm x 124mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This idea started with my research of glass recycling. During the sorting process, impurities such as metals, rubbers and plastics must be removed and this process consumes huge amounts of electricity and manpower. And I found out that food container is the one needs to be sorted from other materials the most. Why? Because most of glass containers consists at least two different materials to make the container be sealed to keep food fresh. Only two pieces of glass can hardly be sealed, so this is why making glass container needs other materials. Thus, I want to create a glass container using only one material but able to keep food from oxide.

CHALLENGE:
Water seal is not original, it comes from ancient China. It is efficient and eco-friendly, but there isn't much design using it nowadays because people somehow reject to use old fashion technologies. People prefer live in a modern way. However, I think it’s important that we can learn something valuable from the way people lived before. While designing, I found myself trying hard to find a balance of the old fashion technology and modern aesthetic, in the meanwhile make it possible when manufacturing.
