DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Elysium

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Decorative Figurine

INSPIRATION:
The design is a call out to people who love art, humanity and the world. A hummingbird has become the symbol of the brand’s way of thinking — it is as light as hollow jewelry and as fragile as the planet’s health.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The main purpose of the project is to show the perspectives of lab-grown diamonds and 3D printing in the sphere of luxury jewelry. It shows a hummingbird drinking nectar as a symbol of nature and its balance. The stand, on the other hand, has zones of destruction with a dramatic black finish and looks as if it might break any minute. The question is, how long will the flower last, keeping its balance with the stem and feeding the bird on its nectar?

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
One of the difficult engineering tasks was to determine the center of mass of the composition. To achieve realistic bird flight, only one connection point had to be created between the hummingbird and the flower stem. The collapsed stem construction (in the silver figurine) adds the fragility of this balance.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in 2018 and was completed in August 2019. In September 2019 it was presented at the Vicenzaoro International Jewelry Show - Vicenzaoro

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The figurine was modelled using mathematical computations and a fully computerised workflow. It consists of 31 unique parts. To realize the project, a 3D printer was upgraded with its resolution increased up to 5 microns. The patented technology of direct casting enabled accurate shape geometry and plasticity, and allowed to create an item with the thickness of metal at 0.35mm. This model is made of silver with lab-grown gemstones. The total weight including the ballast is 110 grams. Design trivia — the figurine of the bird has only one point of contact with the stem.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
116 mm x 116 mm x 165 mm. It consists of 31 unique parts. There are 1848 gems. The thickness of metal is 0.35mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Our goal was to create the shell that is unlimited in design and to significantly reduce the amount of precious material that we used for the project. We were able to modify the traditional approach to jewelry-making process and create something brand-new. The figure, printed with an accuracy of 10 microns and a shell thickness of 0.35 mm, is a demonstration of the possibilities of our patented technology. It’s hollow, it’s 3-d printed using burned materials, and it’s produced with the help of direct casting. The project took more than 2 years to complete.

CHALLENGE:
One of the tasks of the project was to demonstrate the possibility of a technology that significantly saves precious metal and allows to realize the forms created by the designer. This is an example of how designer invented technology to implement his ideas, rather than adjusting to the limitations of existing technology.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
ZELENIN

PROFILE:
The brand ZELENIN was founded in 2017 by Roman Zelenin, a Russian designer with a background in CAD engineering. It was first presented to the public in September 2019 at the Vicenza jewelry show, where Deep Jewelry collection was introduced. DEEP Jewelry, a collection of wedding bands with cultivated diamonds, was initially conceived to spread the idea of reasonable luxury. The skewness of these rings, which follows the shape of palm lines, emphasizes human nature and reminds of the need to maintain environmental balance. Parure “Ratio” was virtually presented at the exhibition. In the virtual showcase, a 3D animated version was shown instead of the actual item in order to demonstrate one of the ways to save resources. The brand’s firm belief is that the future of the art of jewellery lies in a synthesis of technology and design. The jewellery of the future is a shine of novel ideas embodied in metal, ergonomics, and environmental care.
