INSPIRATION:
Marine inhabitants often use shells to change the functions of their bodies. I wanted to use that principle for the couch. By applying a little fantasy, a person can change it and turn into other pieces of furniture. This ability gives positive emotions, and it may be very useful when changing the design or functionality of the room so that a person can use the sofa again. Repeated use of furniture has a great impact on the environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Project "Shell" is a modern approach to furniture design. The main principle is the multi-functionality of the sofa. It can change due to the flexible back. The traditional design of the sofa is transformed into a lounge sofa, double-sided sofa, or ottoman.
The ability of transformation will generate a positive emotional response in children and adults.
The color solution of the series is suitable for current interiors: white and gray version with accent gold pillows for interiors in the style of New Retro; and the dark gray version with bright red pillows for interiors in the style of minimalism.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A person can have a totally new experience interacting with this piece of furniture. You can use a couple of movements to move the back of the sofa and transform it depending on what you need at the moment: to meet guests, sit down or take a nap.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2018 in Moscow and finished in May 2018 in Moscow.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Functions: 1. For public spaces in which various events are often held (schools, colleges, shopping centers, exhibition centers). 2. And also for residential small spaces, with the need to change the functions of the room. 3. For standard and large living spaces, so that the design of the sofa allows reuse when changing the design.
CHALLENGE:
To show object transformation capabilities, its universality, reuse. To induce an emotional response from the viewer.

NAME:
Alexey Danilin
PROFILE:
I have been practicing design for more than 10 years, drawing sketches for stage sets, projecting interiors, elaborating branding, and creating fanciful installations as a modern artist.
Eventually, I started practicing lighting and furniture design. That is what gives me the inspiration to create things, combining utility, applicability, proportion, emotionality with my own sense of beauty.
I was born in Moscow in 1987. I got a university degree in Arts and started my career working for the French designer and decorator Vanina Boude. Later, I practiced modern art; my works were on display at the Moscow Biennale of Modern Art and other exhibitions. Then, I was drawing sketches for theatrical performances, shows, and different events.
At the same time, I participated in the Moscow Furniture Display with my lamp and furniture prototypes. Thanks to this fact one of my lamps landed on the cover of the magazine Light & Design. After that, I was invited to found and head the regional design department of the German Brand Maytoni.
Recently, I have taken part in international awards and become the prize winner of Red Dot, Pin Win, and Kreata. More than once my products were displayed at the exhibitions Isaloni in Milan, Light + Building in Frankfurt, and all over the world, my products are used for the decoration of a great number of restaurants and apartments.
