| DESIGN NAME: Ponto PRIMARY FUNCTION: Customizable Table-system INSPIRATION: Throughout the latter 15years, I have, among other themes, worked thoroughly with a philosophy of creating very adaptable and flexible furniture by exploiting the gravity as a leg-locking-system, allowing the legs to be attached in different positions without any use of tools. Ponto table is inspired by an earlier design of mine, following this philosophy, a bench in aluminium. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ponto table is an innovative combination of aluminium - the supporting beam - and solid wood – the legs. In the upper-end of the legs, a “negative print” of the extruded beam-profile is milled out. This allows the leg to be slided onto the beam and left where wanted. When the table stands, gravity locks the legs and stabilizes the whole construction. Advantages: Freedom in leg-positioning, customizing in shape and size, stability, extremely long spans between legs, easy exchange of legs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table-legs can be slided onto the alu-beams, by hand, and left where wanted or optimal for the selected chairs.. Gravity will lock and stabilize the standing table. Advantages: Exceptionally long spans between legs and exceptionally long overhangs, due to the strong aluminium-beams, - Freedom in leg-positioning and easy mounting without tools or screws - Freedom to customize tables in shape and size - Easy to replace table-legs - Simple, innovative, functional PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: A first sketch for a table with a similar principle was made by me in 2005. New, revised drawings in 2018. Product-development in cooperation with LAMMHULTS 2018. Launch: february 2019 in Stockholm at Scandinavian Furniture Fair. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Special-designed extruded aluminium-profiles for the load-bearing, longitudinal beams. Milled solid wood for the legs and tabletops in normal production-methods. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Many options for std.-dimensions. Furthermore, the construction of the table, allows a huge degree of customisation in lengths and widths. TAGS: PONTO-table, innovative, design; Troels grum-Schwensen, manufacturer: LAMMHULTS RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As an architect, it has always been a challenge for me to create furniture with much more adaptability to given architectural spaces than common. I have designed several furniture from a philosophy of mine with free-positioned legs, locked by gravity and attached solely by hand- using no tools. Many experiments and different designs along the way. CHALLENGE: - To create a table-system, simple in construction, with a huge degree of adaptability and customizability for users, interior-architects and in the manufacturing. Instead of making a whole 4-sides frame, this table only have the supporting beams where needed , in the long direction, while the table-top itself are sufficient in the short direction (of rectangular tables).
