DESIGN NAME: Pineapple Pins
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stationary Packaging
INSPIRATION: Pineapple Pins is inspired by the structure and subsistence of the Pineapple fruit, the rhythmic arrangement of sharp scales on the outer walls of the fruit form the essence of the product packaging. A hypothetical brand that features a packaging solution for a persisting problem of picking, using and storing of push pins.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pineapple Pins packaging is an easy, un-injuring four-step versatile solution for all age groups and for every scenario involving the usage of push pins. Right from the correct size to be ergonomic, unit be convenient, made from eco-friendly materials, being user friendly, being safe for kids, being structurally apt, applicable for repeated number of uses, being able to be stored hassle-free to be slipped into pockets and carry-ons.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The package offers a sense of perceptively attentive yet subtle. The push pins package upgrade implies the product image through a set of visual elements. A visual guide to the use of the package adheres to the overall product image. When opened, the package turns into an array of pins on each inner face and can further be flipped inside out for an easier constructive unit. The pins after use can be placed back or simply dropped into the package. The sheer versatility and ease of use is the essence.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2019 and completed in July 2020 in Mumbai, India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The package is produced from recyclable and bio-degradable grinded cardboard. Using eco-friendly materials replacing the use of plastic cases was the obligation. The print is achieved with flexographic printing process. The push pins are stamped onto using existing manufacturing methods of planar punching with the pins attached to a plate, punched and released. The unit is easily mass manufacturable.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height: 80mm Width: 80mm Depth: 80mm. Dimensions are optimized to fit into hands, pockets, and carry-ons as well as assure larger quantities of pins per pack versus existing plastic cases.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research objective was to develop a distinct and precise level of requirements for the package to keep the product use cycle simple at the same time making it practical and versatile. Functionality was a major aspect of the design distinguishing it from the existing packages. The obligatory mandate was to replace the plastic packaging with eco-friendly materials. The user's standpoint as empathy was a major inspiration to innovate. Minimalism followed in ideation was also critical in getting a resourceful outcome. Ergonomically the dimensions were tested and validated for a better user experience.
CHALLENGE: Ideation and structuring for versatility were the most challenging parts of the project, following the basics to develop an optimum solution.
