DESIGN NAME: Gentle Monsters
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sound Design
INSPIRATION: Every monster has a beginning, present and an end state. Taking this as a queue, each piece is designed with musical elements to represent ‘that’ particular state, to take the take the listener on a linear journey, while doing justice to each Monster’s essence.
The difficulty was to make the artist's personal, subjective emotions tangible. After rounds of conversations with Nisshtha, I decided to use certain sonic elements to exaggerate the emotions.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “Gentle Monsters” is a personal art project started in July 2017 by Nisshtha Khattar. It is a series of portraits of her own personal monsters that she has encountered and become friends with.
The intention behind creating these sounds was to accompany the artwork with a sonic backdrop, allowing the viewer to completely immerse themselves in the artist’s work, both visually and sonically.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Scan. Watch. Listen. Experience.
The exhibition is designed with the hope to immerse the viewer into a visual and aural experience - enabling them to relate to the artists own journey of discovering, uncovering and in turn making her monsters gentle. Each artwork has its respective poem (Quintain) and sound which aims to enhance the essence of the monsters for the viewers.
Scanning the QR code takes the viewer to the Gentle Monsters Playlist which allows them to play the sound for the Monster they are viewing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research took place over 1 month. It consisted of conversations between Nisshtha Khattar and me. Where my goal was understand her thoughts and emotions behind each monster and convert into a tangible form which the audience could relate to.
The research consisted of going through my own personal experiences of fear, anxiety, Loss etc and channel that into various sonic elements.
Secondary research consisted of studying Films and other Pop media in order to understand how certain emotions are best communicated to an audience.
CHALLENGE: the hardest part of this design activity was to make the subjective emotion and the experience of the artist into something tangible that the audience can understand and relate to.
