DESIGN NAME: EnGo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Battery Case
INSPIRATION: The design project was initiated after lithium was found in a deposit in Serbia. Among battery-operated products are EnGo Planet solutions, so it was expected that the company would invest in the development of housings for lithium-based batteries. The end product would be used in the company's solar solutions or marketed separately for other usages.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The battery case is minimalistic and contemporary, portable, and fits in one hand, stackable, easily operated, and customizable. The design implements large radii and beveled edges to maximally save space, allowing the cables and connectors to fall between the cases. The cooling opening accepts a detachable multifunctional handle. The battery terminal caps can be tightened by both a hand and an Allen key. The operation and battery capacity can be monitored by a smartphone via Bluetooth.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: One unit is a portable smart battery, while a set can be oriented in several ways for different usages in other products. Rotating a case can pair up a set into a hexagonal vertical composition suitable for placement inside a light pole. A large number of units can be stacked into a rectangular composition for other usages, allowing cables of up to 10mm in diameter to be routed horizontally, and MC4 solar connectors 19mm in diameter to be routed vertically between the units.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project lasted several weeks and took place in Belgrade, Serbia.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The case was planned for 12V & 24V solar light poles and Smart benches, as well as an individual product, but also for differently orientable sets within high-end solutions of other manufacturers, like power wall and power bank products, electric vehicles, yachts, etc. For that reason, the positions of the terminals are customizable during production to fit the product's intention or depending on the type of set, also enabling easier connection and usage of cables of short or uniform length.
CHALLENGE: Intended multifunctionality required the handle to be used to carry and lower or pull up the battery in or out of position in large sets. The solution is flexible and can easily be inserted into the carrying position, held in place by outward-bent ends. It can be removed or slipped safely inside the housing when not in use and can carry two units at the same time if needed. Safe stackability was achieved through two pairs of recesses on the upper side, one pair being the terminal cap recesses.
