| DESIGN NAME: Art and Us PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book Design INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the book Art & Us is the artist sketchbook, in which there are a lot of hand technical drawings, therefore, to enhance this effect, these stylistic textures were specially created for each page of the book. With this principle of the book, we reveal what lies behind the artist’s final work - research and the author’s hard work. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: After five years of activity, Lewben Art Foundation has published a book of selected works of foundation. In order to give meaning to the various periods of the fund, we have presented only visualizations of author’s works without informative text. At the end of the book is presented a small booklet, in which the author’s works are described according to the numbered pages of the book. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Almost every page of the book was created with original illustrations, used rough, yellowish paper for exhibition documentation and transparent markers with numbers are inserted between the pages to make the object as seamless as possible and to resemble the artist sketchbook. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2019 and finished in January 2020 in Vilnius, Lithuania. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In order to convey the impression of the artist sketchbook, a binding technology was used for the book - kettle stitching. The main cover of the book is made of soft, transparent PVC sheet with single color silk-screen printing and designed pocket in the back for a smaller catalog. The first sheet of paper uses hot foil stamping, which is translucent throught PVC and gives a two-layer impression. All main pages were printed with UV technology on a Galerie Art volume of 115 g. and Holmen Book Extra 80 g. paper. For the transparent pages was used Curious Collection Translucents Bright White 100 g., Gmund Colors Transparent Red 100 g. Information catalog paper - Rainbow Intensive Red 120 g. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Softcover book, 285 mm x 245 mm x 15 mm, 242 page. Printed in offset, silk-screen printing, UV printing. TAGS: Lewben Art Foundation, Contemporary Art, Art Books, Illustration, Vilnius, Lithuania RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the process, we wanted to create a seamless and the same time abstract object - book, representing the activieties of the Lewben Art Foundation for five years. Therefore, we had to find a common concept that would clearly and simply represent the book theme Art & Us. The principle of illustrations was chosen for this. CHALLENGE: The most difficult part was creating background illustrations for each page, which would be an abstract reminder of the artist sketchbook and would have its own style. The illustrations were hand drawn, then photographed, scanned, and computer-processed. The book selects three types of papers in order to better reveal the art works, archival documentation of exhibitions, and transparent markers. NAME: Lewben Art Foundation PROFILE: The Lewben Art Foundation was established in 2013 by art patron, collector and chairman of the Board at Lewben Group Vilius Kavaliauskas and his wife Rita Kavaliauskienė with the aim of making the constantly growing collection of 1,500 pieces of artwork representing more than 300 artists available to the public. The collection of the Foundation includes artwork of various media, starting with painting, sculpture, photography, graphics and also includes video works, installations and documented performances; it covers the period from the 20th century Lithuanian modernism to Lithuanian and international contemporary art. By creating and initiating various modern and contemporary art projects and by contributing to them, the Lewben Art Foundation promotes interest in visual arts. The Foundation has already held several dozen exhibitions, published a number of art albums and monographs about artists. The Lewben Art Foundation has plans to establish its own exhibition spaces in the future, but for the time being, the Foundation cooperates with professional visual art institutions in Lithuania and abroad. |
