DESIGN NAME: Shed of Knowledge
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Library Station
INSPIRATION: The motif of bamboo is employed here to represent Chinese notion of books and readings. Aluminum extruded bamboo tiles are fixed on wire and arranged in different directions to create textures and colours. They line up to form interesting pattern facing the pedestrian street. A small landscape garden is found inside the library station to offer the public a relaxing and cozy environment with seating for temporary reading and resting.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Instead of loud architecture, the library station takes a simple form which integrates into the neighbourhood. Silver aluminum corrugated sheet is selected for the exterior while prefabricated concrete panel is used as the interior. The metallic look of the shelter creates an interesting dialogue with the busy urban scene.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Tai Wai Self Service Library Station is situated within the heart of residential area right next to the MTR station. It offers the local community a 24hours borrow and return service. This project is a collaboration between the ArchSD property service branch and the in-house architectural branch.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Duration: 1 year
Location: Tai Wai, New Territories, Hong Kong, China

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Dry construction and prefabrication are used in the project due to confined site area. The main steel structure of the library station is prefabricated in factory and delivered on site in order to minimize disturbance to the neighbourhood during construction.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The library station wedges into the small but fertile community services void: it seeks to facilitate people who do not have formal library services nearby and those who are unable to meet the libraries opening hours. This encourages reading via the provision of automated round-the-clock services with enhanced convenience and accessibility. With the challenge in quality control and logistic arrangement being successfully overcome, a natural and stylish environment is established to promote the intelligent library services in Smart Hong Kong.
CHALLENGE: The project team overcome the challenge in quality control and logistic arrangement and transform the left over space with a modern and stylish design. Entrance of the shelter is connected to the existing covered walkway which provides an all-weather access to the MTR station. Designers have incorporated inclusive design elements into library station. Seats are provided for short reading and the barrier-free ramp provides access to the public.
