DESIGN NAME: InPark
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Secret Community Garden
INSPIRATION: The former park in the site, which was hardpaved ball courts, was built in 1973 serving mainly factory workers at the time. Being one of the past major manufacturing centres in Hong Kong, Kwun Tong was occupied by large factories and godowns. But due to recent economic development, the area transforms into a business district. The existing playground can no longer meet the community needs. Being the only breathing lung and urban connecting space of the area, InPARK aims to provide more flexible leisure space and diverse greenery for multi-generations in the district.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is to turn a tiny open space surrounded by high-dense commercial buildings into a secret garden for the public to enjoy, play and sit. It comprised of a gentle-sloped central green lawn, a half basketball court, a multi-purposed stage, shelters, exhibition kiosks and supporting office and toilet facilities. Surrounding the central lawn, we installed seven sets of public artworks for the celebration of the industrial past of the area.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It sublimes the memory and history of the local district and catalyzes the transformation of the adjacent buildings. The surrounding commercial buildings and the commercial development are opening up their own doorways to the InPARK. The rebirth of InPARK gives rise of a refreshing vibe to the district and adopts to the changing lifestyle of the local people.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Planning & Design Time: 2 Years; Construction Time: 2 Years; Project Location: Kwun Tong, Kolwoon, Hong Kong SAR, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: InPark develops from a concept that relates to the integration of urban context and organic natural forms of landscaping in the park. We set the toilet block and park office at the sides to provide screening of the outside urban activities. In the midst of the park, a gradually sloped lawn is created contrasting the hard edges of the surrounding tall buildings, visitors are free to run and play on this open ground. Surrounding the lawn, a mix of native trees are planted to create a soft boundary of seasonal colours. Layering of spaces is created by using metal screens and translucent glass louvres to delineate between the toilets and the garden to enhance the transitional experience between the semi-open and semi-enclosed. Seven award-winning artworks are designed to interact with the park users in different creative ways to celebrate the glorious industrial past of the manufacturing industries.
