DESIGN NAME: iONE360
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Visual Product Configurator
INSPIRATION: Even today, consumers are expected to buy customizable furniture based on a showroom model and a fabric sample. How can consumers imagine how a sofa will look in a totally different setup, with different fabric & color and whether it will fit? They can't! 51% postpones and 36% cancels their purchase. Let's help them! Let's help consumers buy and retailers sell these complex products. Sales value goes up and delivered products will match expectations. Less returns, less waste and happy customers
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 36% of consumers cancels a purchase of customizable furniture because they can’t imagine how it will look. iONE360 is a visual product configurator suited for the furniture industry. It can handle elaborate customizable products incl. complex business rules and pricing, which can result in millions of variations. Users can create configurations themselves and can add 2D and 3D visuals, which are translated to an easy step-by-step guided selling process that can be embedded in other applications.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Furniture shopping is often experienced as stressful. There’s so much doubt while a lot of money is involved. iONE360 turns that stress into a fun experience! Users are in control of interior design like never before while our software makes sure they don’t make mistakes. This also makes it the perfect guided selling tool for sales people. It runs in browsers on devices that everyone owns. It’s highly realistic and easy to use. Integrated with the business: providing detailed pricing, logistical and manufacturing info.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This varies. We've started development of our product configuration engine in 2009, while other elements such as the roomplanner is a relatively recent addition which started in 2016 and AR/VR started in 2019. Development was mainly done in Goes, The Netherlands.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In order to achieve our software which is highly generic (from a coding point of view) and embeddable into virtually any web application, we started out taking risks to use (at the time) unproven technologies in order to achieve maximum usability, betting very early on the Angular framework, ThreeJS and the WebXR API which has the promise of enabling virtual and augmented reality directly from browsers (users don’t have to install apps). The true beauty for us is the software architecture through we can generate packages with different combinations of software features, all from a single code-base.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Due to the fact we publish the software as javascript packages, it runs in the browser and can be embedded into virtually any webbased application (websites, webshops, CRM/ERP, etc). Also, the 3D scenes are accessible without having to have any kind of specialized software or hardware and even for our Virtual and Augmented Reality experiences, you can simply use any recent smartphone without having to install an app, because we can use WebXR.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Apart from desk research into the proper tooling and research in the form of involving various customers and consumers in the design process, no large scale research was conducted.
CHALLENGE: Developing a product configurator isn't necessarily hard. Making a product configurator which is truly generic, where users can create their own configurations of virtually any type of product, while retaining the link with logistical and administrative processes ánd being able to add visuals to this data, is incredibly complex. Then, translating all that complexity to front-end interfaces which even the least tech-savvy people can use on regular devices, add even more to the data & UX design challenge. It’s a process of continuous improvements which has been going on for many years.
