DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Future Tribes

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Event Organiser Space

INSPIRATION:
The concept Future Tribe was inspired from Centrestage main mission to be a platform for discovering the latest upcoming fashion brands and talents in Asia under one roof. From this, a narrative was developed about future tribalism by mixing new and traditional cultural roots, symbolism, belief systems and new technology to create a radical and contemporary visual to uplift the event organiser’s space. These include the entry concourse, a central display and a catwalk space.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Centrestage was a 4-day fashion event held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. With 240 contemporary fashion brands housed within a 9000m2 space, the event organizer wanted to create an eye-catching theme to elevate the show ambience and reflect its core mission of finding new fashion talent. Three areas were provided: the entrance concourse then inside the exhibition hall central display and catwalk area. Besides this task, the onsite set-up time was limited to only 3 days.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The first impression of Future Tribes concept starts at the entry concourse with 4 holo fan display units emitting images of random typography and symbolisms. Leading pass a large LED screens and a series of 3m high graphic panels. Inside the hall central display, a suspended motorized triangulated LED shapes hovered above the central display. Followed by an open catwalk space with a 3D holograph LEDs display unit, emitting messages or pulsating titles of upcoming fashion shows.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project duration was 3 months from initial briefing to onsite completion. It was launched on the 4th of September 2019 and ran for 4 days. Limited to only 3 days for the onsite set up. Centrestage was located at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Due to the tight 3-day set up, all the design formats were prefabricated off site and reassembled onsite. All the walls were made from reusable aluminium structural frames covered with stretched vinyl graphics, mesh, polycarbonate sheets and mirror finish. Audio and visual equipment, LED screens, mechanical moving technology with triangulated shaped lights, free standing holo fan and 3D holograph LEDs were hired. Biodegradable carpets and LED to mimic neon lights were also applied.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The 1000m2 entrance concourse space had four 3m high x 2.5m wide freestanding holographic fan displays, colourful super graphics vinyl walls and carpets and a 5m (w) x 3m (h) LED screen completed the entry. Inside the hall, a 185m2 central display with suspended moving triangle shaped LEDs hovered above mannequins on wooden LED plinths. A 2m dia. wide x 4m high 3D LED display unit sits centrally on the 210m2 catwalk arena. The 4m high catwalk backdrop is finished with mirror on plywood backing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The concept Future Tribes stems from the mission of Centrestage to discover the most contemporary fashion talents in Asia. Echoing the shows pioneering spirit, our team research envisaged a new future look by learning from the past. We researched into various cultural origins, symbolisms, runes, belief system and aesthetic details mixed with technology to create a new visual identity and reality for the show. Our design was aimed to create a radical and fearless future in fashion for a new generation.

CHALLENGE:
The challenging for the creative research was defining a design language to position a fresh contemporary feel for this show. By discovering and examining the roots of many different human cultures helped us to define a new look. For example, taking influence from Viking runes, ancient hieroglyphics, tattoos and mixing these to create a new design language and typography. Our purpose was to uplift and differentiate the image of Centrestage from other fashion trade shows in the region.
