| DESIGN NAME: Kodama Bar Stool PRIMARY FUNCTION: Seating INSPIRATION: The word Kodama translates to the "spirit of the tree". The intent behind the Kodama Bar Stool is to pay tribute to wood, one of our world's most renewable materials, and to honor the tree that granted us its life's work. The goal of this project was to combine the knowledge of traditional woodworking with a CNC router to accomplish joinery that was previously unobtainable in complexity and precision. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A subtle Japandi design with a grounded and organic aesthetic. The contrasting Walnut and Applewood highlight the stool's creative and original wood joinery. The Kodama Bar Stool is a blend of ancient techniques with modern technology to create a piece that will hopefully endure for generations, in both construction and design aesthetic. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Visible and honest wood joinery designed to hopefully endure through generations of daily use. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2016 in the mountains of Colorado and was finished in Southern California in March 2019. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The challenge of this project was devising a method to program the powerful CNC router to delicately manifest the design through complex coding of the toolpaths and precision workholdings of the components on the machine. This innovative process has many more exciting years of refinement ahead as we are just beginning to open the door to a new era of parametric design and manufacturing that will allow human creativity to flourish with these new capabilities. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 45cm, Depth 54cm, Height 66cm TAGS: Wood joinery, stool, furniture, autocad, fusion 360, cnc router, cnc machine RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: This is a new field of manufacturing with little education opportunities available so I'm self-taught and continually making everything up as I go.
