DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Celeste

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Pavilion

INSPIRATION:
This area is known for pottery. People love porcelain, but pay little attention to the brick kiln that fires it. Borrowing a cultural symbol like a kiln that is always neglected and turning this into something special, is more dramatic in awakening the locals of their traditional culture as well as their living style.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This street corner was an empty lot occupied by random parking before reclaimed by city. A design solution is called to cure this urban space with something culturally meaningful. Special sintered bricks were glazed and re-fired, then laid to build this kiln-shaped installation with unique transmutation glaze of Celedon on skin. An old brick masonry technique of corbel dome is also used in building this structure. At night, young couple light candles inside. Through holes between bricks, it looks as if thousand year old kiln fire had added a layer of shiny gloss to the outside enamel. It freezes a moment of flambé glaze on site that reminds the locals of their cultural heritage of firing Celedon pottery, at a street corner of downtown Lishui.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It is a kiln-shaped pavilion that acts as a cultural installation in public space for people to relax.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
1. Material Research: Craftsmanship of glaze tranmutation is studied with local pottery workers to custom make glazed sintered bricks. 2. Structure Research: This brick structure utilizes a traditional technique of corbel dome, which was often used when building pagodas in ancient times. Full scale mock-up was experimented to test the structural strength.

CHALLENGE:
Bricks use material different from the Celadon pottery for clay body. Special sintered bricks were chosen to be glazed and re-fired. Special glazing skills were utilized to finally produce 2,500 bricks, each with different glaze color.
