DESIGN NAME: GrowForest
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Educational Learning Toy
INSPIRATION: The forests cover more than 30% of the earth's surface, due to climate change, excessive forest rafting and bushfires, global forests are facing an unprecedented severe crisis. Large-scale deforestation has drastically reduced the forest area that brings great impact to forest ecology. In echo to United Nation SGDs15, developed a set of educational learning toys to enhance children consciousness on the protection, conservation and restoration of the forestry and terrestrial ecology.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a set of educational learning toys for children, helping them to understand sustainable development goals of life on land, the protection, conservation and restoration of forestry. Using Taiwan domestic woods of acacia, incense cedar, Tochigi, Taiwan fir, camphor tree, and Asian fir to make up as tree model. Children can feel the warm touch of wooden texture, smell the unique scent of each tree species, knowing the altitude terrain for different tree species. Besides, an illustrated story book help to deep root children the concept of forest conservation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The teaching aids with conservation forest as the core, using assembly methods, first recognize the changes in terrain and altitude, then recognize the different species of trees in Taiwan, and use picture books to guide children into the context to play with toys. Learn through four senses-hearing, smell, vision, and touch. Children feel everything in the forest, and understand the forest from childhood education, and strengthen the concept of natural ecological conservation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in July 2019 and was completed in Tainan, Taiwan in March 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Type of research: The four senses of learning, smell, sight and touch. Goal: Recognize wood and conservation concepts. Methods: Morphological analysis, wood material analysis, toy type size analysis. Data collection: market research and toy analysis for children aged 2 to 5 years. research tools: Solid Works, KeyShot.
CHALLENGE: The density of a certain kind of wood is different, and some shapes cannot be made by CNC processing, which needs to be made by hand. The paint of different wood colors is slightly different than expected. In order to achieve the contour shapes and colors we wanted, the team tried and made many mistakes and finally came up with a good solution.
