DESIGN NAME: Family With a Pearl Necklace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Luxury Residential
INSPIRATION: One main space is centered around Green Aquamarine Necklace, a piece by the contemporary French artist, Jean-Michel Othoniel. Inspired by his 4-story installation commissioned by Chanel, NYC, the flow of the necklace and the interplay of the individually hand-blown glass beads resonates with the space and overall aesthetic of the property.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A focus on humanity and the role of art in revealing the spirit of the client, this project has been designed around timeless pieces of focal collectible art. The fusing of contemporary works of art and the spaces designed around them, transcends simple materiality, while emphasizing the interplay and role of art in reflecting humanity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This residence was created for a family of five: a couple, two children, and one grandmother. The layout for the various floors is arranged with the first floor logically a public space, the second for the children and grandmother, and the third floor for the couple. The multimedia space in the basement is the family’s entertainment space. Together with the outdoor garden and swimming pool, it provides a comfortable family atmosphere.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project is built in 2018 in Taipei.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Aligning an emotional connection to art with the client presented a substantial commitment of time and energy through gallery, art fair, and exhibit visits. Through this process, a shift in the imagined relationship between art and space occurred from object to dialog, and indeed between the client and art as a relationship rather than possession.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total space for this project comprises 1700m2, with 1400 m2 indoor and 330 m2 outdoor space. The house has 4 floors: one basement and three above-ground levels with 4 bedrooms, 2 kitchens, 1 outdoor courtyard, 1 outdoor swimming pool, 1 gym, and 1 multimedia room.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In understanding this space both as art and through art, the goal for this project was curating a home art collection in sync with the client. The chemistry between art and space transforms environments in the forefront of human consciousness. This interaction shifts thinking, and even behavior in envisioning a better world through the seasons of time and emotion.
CHALLENGE: The journey of artistic discovery, exploration and understanding took the designer and client on a two-year tour of galleries, art exhibitions and fairs in NY, London, Paris, and Taiwan. Through dialog with the art in these spaces, the client gained a self-understanding and engaged with art on a new level. The final pieces curated for this collection guided the overall design of the space, while the space itself became an extension of the art.
