PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Wooden Drone
INSPIRATION: No matter from the ancient wooden buildings with different characteristics, or to the modern wooden products of all kinds, each and every work, always can arouse the resonance and love of everyone. Through our products, we hope to reduce people's use and dependence on plastics and metals. Starting with the pieces of wood, we hope to awaken the craftsman spirit deep in everyone's heart. Starting with a small idea, we hope that innovation can be a habit for both children and adults.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Airwood Wooden DIY Drone is a serials of four-axis drone with a wooden DIY structure as the frame. It uses modularity controllers, motors, batteries, remote controls and other modules to install drones with different structures.The drone has excellent performance and has the basic performance of the mid-end consumer-grade drone in the market, supporting indoor hovering, aerial photography, programming and other functions.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When get a package of Airwood, users will get a wood box. Inside that, they will get several wood boards and all the electronic parts. They need to assemble all that parts to build a drone, including the remote controller. They also only need to change the wood frame to change Airwood to another appearance. When they want to take aerial photo or try programming flight, just to put the corresponding module on the flight controller and connect.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Airwood project started in March 2017 in Shenzhen, China. The first MVP version is launched in September 2017. After testing on a small scale, the Airwood formal version is launched in June, 2018. In January 2019, Airwood advanced version with indoor hover and programming functions is launched. Till now, Airwood's model design, module, programming functions are still growing.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Different from traditional solid wood products, Airwood selects composite basswood board as the main materials. It has a high utilization rate for wood and a soft surface with silk luster. The board is cut by laser cutter. We only use the 2-mm thick board, so as to ensure the structural strength and make the laser-cut board have a good appearance. The wood boards have FSC and CARB certifications, which mean the whole process is highly environmental friendly.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Drones are often seen as cool and cold. When we found that the market needed a drone that was really for kids, we wanted to change that perception. Drone technologies have no secret, so we designed the assembly structure. Drones can be warm and friendly, so we chose light wood. Drones are very easy to operate, so we use modularity technology and AI algorithms. Drones can also be programmed by kids, so we equipped the drone with the graphical programming function. Thus was born Airwood.
CHALLENGE: How to use such a thin board to assemble a structurally stable drone is the first difficulty of Airwood design. We need to consider both the wood structural strength, the drone aerodynamics, the fun of the assembly and the appearance. And the diversity of drone frames also brings the new challenges for drone control. In order to have a stable and consistent experience on frames with different weight, inertia and dynamic performance, we need to develop AI algorithms for drone too.
