DESIGN NAME: Radial
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Litter Bin
INSPIRATION: the radial bin design was dictated by functionality. We wanted to create a product that, in addition to its basic function, will provide additional opportunities, that's why we equipped our trash bin with an air quality sensor. We designed a minimalist product, the trash bin was inspired by a simple letterbox, which is to encourage the use of the product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Enovio Radial is a smart trash bin equipped with a photovoltaic panel which supplies its additional functions. The product can fulfill an important information function in the city system by collecting data and transferring it to city services. The built-in 25 watt photovoltaic panel can power the air quality sensor, fill sensor and advertisement lighting. These functionalities will help the city service to get information about the bin requiring emptying and the residents to read the air quality measurements.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Radial bin is fully autonomous. The functions do not require additional power supply because they are powered by a photovoltaic panel. The energy produced is stored in an internal battery. The energy is then used to power the smog sensor, bin fill sensor and backlight. The bin manages its energy itself. The backlight is activated in the evening when the sensor detects twilight
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: the project was developed in Warsaw. Conceptual work lasted from February 2019. After many prototypes and tests, the project was finally implemented in January 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Radial trash bin is made of powder-coated steel and aluminum. All additional elements are easily removable, which allows for quick service and replacement of components. The photovoltaic panel is not an integral part, after the product has been used up all components can be recycled.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The most important thing during product development was creating an intelligent energy management system. We wanted a relatively small solar panel to be able to power several functions at the same time, so we had to develop a system that would be responsible for turning them on only when needed.
CHALLENGE: The design task was to create a simple product that will not dominate in its surroundings and at the same time have a high aesthetic value.
