DESIGN NAME: See and feel
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Students Service Centre
INSPIRATION: Consultation as an experience to a resort.
Strong sunlight erased the details of the blue basketball court, and the blue patch of colour gave us the mental image of pool. Suddenly a very calming atmosphere. We want to reconstruct this perception in the design, focusing on the light and image.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located at the centre of the campus, the new Student Services Centre sides with the blue outdoor playground is located in the heart of the school, giving students a space to understand and talk to each other. Private hubs are provided for intimate and confidential discussions, while common spaces allow people to gather and learn from peers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: On one side is the collaborative office space for the counsellors, while there are 8 private pods on the other side. By conceiving them as standalone volumes, small pocket spaces are created where students can wait privately for their meeting, or enjoy a quiet moment. In the middle is a common space where students and teachers come and go, passing through the space, meeting their friends. Diverse activities happen in this white space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2019 and was completed in November 2019. It is located inside Yew Chung International School, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Effort was put to minimize the material palette to white paint, white vinyl floor, grey felt, grey granolithic, patterned glass and greenery.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: There are 8 private hubs in the Student Service Centre, each of 2.5m by 2.5m. Thin walls, yet to fulfil the acoustic requirements for private conversation, are constructed. Each hub has a light trough above that acts as the room indicating light.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design process started with a physical model, and the desire of sitting in the calm and relaxed environment for private conversation expressed in a montage. These in turn dictated the plan of the space.
CHALLENGE: The challenge lies in reconceptualizing the whole students service centre, which traditionally, each counsellor would have his or her own office; and also to locate the usual very private activity in the centre of the school. The design tries to articulate different degrees of privacy in a small space, yet without sacrificing spatial qualities. Greenery and natural light are introduced to various small corners.
