| DESIGN NAME: Romexis 6 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dental Imaging Software INSPIRATION: Some software solutions equate usability with predetermined workflows and limited options for customisation. We took a different approach. For Romexis 6, we wanted to do a complete user interface redesign in order to make a technically complex product more intuitive and able to adapt to different specialist workflows as well as individual preferences. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The unique strength of Romexis is that it allows capturing, viewing and processing all types of imaging data (incl. X-rays, 3D images, photos and videos) in one and the same system. In Romexis 6, we wanted to build on this idea with a fresh user interface which puts the user in charge. The customisable look and range of available tools are designed to make workflows efficient and clutter-free and to allow treatment professionals to be confident in their work. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: One key innovation of Romexis 6 is its ability to accommodate both new and advanced users. While experienced users can personalise their workflows as they prefer, less experienced ones can take advantage of the all-new Workflow Wizards. Using quick videos and helpful texts, the Wizards offer step-by-step guidance which allows performing even advanced tasks with ease. Meanwhile, the software interface remains active to allow the user to leave the Wizard and learn at their own pace. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started in 2018 in the Planmeca HQ in Helsinki and major release will be in May 2020. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Different design concepts were explored through hundreds of user interface sketches and mockups, which were then tested extensively in cooperation with a broad range of dental professionals and specialists. The design work was done using the Sketch and Adobe XD design tools, while the software was developed in Java. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Romexis is designed to work as stand-alone software on a standard PC or as a networked software platform. It is intended for a wide range of dental professionals, including dentists, dental surgeons and radiologists, and can be used to retrieve, process, render, diagnose, review, store and share images of adult and pediatric patients. It can also be used for simulating/evaluatin TAGS: Planmeca, Romexis, Dental imaging software, X-ray, CAD/CAM, Maxillofacial, Surgery, Implantology, Smile Design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project began by collecting as much quantitative data as possible through surveys with dental professionals and Romexis users. The results were then compared to qualitative data from follow-up interviews and field observations to gain an understanding of different users and their practices. Additionally, clickable prototypes were used to gather feedback before the development stage. The insights gained formed the design principles which guided the development of Planmeca Romexis 6. CHALLENGE: The working practices and preferences of dental professionals can vary greatly on both an individual and global level. At the same time, dental professionals work in a demanding environment, in which actions and errors directly impact diagnostics and treatment. Responding to both of these challenges in one, user-oriented software solution was the driving ambition and vision which resulted in Romexis 6.
