DESIGN NAME: Muji Hotel Ginza
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel
INSPIRATION: The concept is “anti-gorgeous anti-cheap”. The common area applies natural and old materials such as 100-years old reclaimed paving stones from Tokyo and iron from decommissioned ships. We aimed to express the richness of nature created by history and the strength of materials. For guest rooms, Natural materials such as wood, stone, soil and textiles were selected. Guests can experience aesthetic and comfortable lifestyle of Muji on a deeper and more personal level.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The first Muji Hotel in Japan is aimed at creating a space where guests can stay comfortably like an extension of their daily life while traveling. The hotel is located on 6th to 10th floor which also accommodates Muji stores on its lower floors. The guest rooms are spacious because of high ceilings and the efficient use of space. To make the guests fully relax, the spaces were designed featuring innate functions and textures of natural materials.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Atelier Muji Ginza which is home to two galleries, a fully stocked library of design books and a salon is located on the hotel lobby floor. The space is operated based on the concept of conveying the design culture to the future. The salon is open from morning until midnight, and visitors can indulge in a calm moment in the middle of busy Ginza. Not only hotel guests but also local neighbors can gather and enjoy a relaxing time with coffee and cocktails.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2016 and finished in April 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As a part of the interior design, rammed earth wall was installed. It contained soil from the land where Muji Yurakucho store had been located for 17 years as a world flagship store until its closure. By using the soil from Muji Yurakucho store that had been a center of the brand to the newly opened Muji Ginza, the hotel is believed to inherit the history and the stories of the brand.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: For offering the experience of staying at Muji Hotel that embodies the philosophy of the brand to many guests, the hotel was planned to have as much guest room as possible. We made comfortable space with high ceilings by making good use of high floor height of the building despite 2200mm narrow frontage of the rooms. In addition, the bathrooms were placed in alternate position of the adjacent rooms for making the guest rooms more spacious.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: It was one of the challenging things for us to install around 100 years old reclaimed paving stones from Tokyo tram track on the main wall of hotel lobby. As there were no identical stones, we laid them on the floor and checked the characters such as texture, size and thickness of each one to find the best layout. More than the 400 historic stones became an icon of Muji hotel Ginza as a result of elaborate work.
