DESIGN NAME: Dancing Gerberas
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Earrings
INSPIRATION: Influenced by art nouveau the gerbera earrings are the result of experimenting with unusual angles. My intention is to reflect the moment of the flowers when they start to dry and release their fragrance, the design seeks to express freshness and femininity. Normally I start sketching all design in paper but in this case, I was mainly inspired by playing with the wax by hand until I got the final version of the earrings. I always say that this method of playing with wax is like drawing in 3D.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Gerberas flowers symbolize beauty and purity. The design is the result of forms based on the patterns presented in the architecture of Art Nouveau. Nature has been captured in earrings showing flowers´ freshness that release fragrance just before taking them to a distillation process. The technique used was hand wax modeling, followed by cast in silver to obtain a master and concluded by a mold. Obtaining the final design the polishing was done carefully by hand, and finally touched with gold plate finish to differentiate the color of the flower with the stem and make it more real. This design expresses freshness and dynamism thanks to the movement of the stones.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Gerberas earrings are one of a kind, its versatile, timeless and elegant.
For their size they could be considered as a Statement. This design is perfect for use on special occasions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design started in March 2017 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico and finished in August 2017 in the same city.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The earrings were first designed, and hand carved in wax by Eliana Palomo then the master was sent to the workshop at Yucatan, Mexico. The earrings were casted in sterling silver from the mold and carefully hand polished. Then for the gold and silver color a 18 karats of gold-plated was applied. Finally, Eliana added the drops of faceted garnets with gold-filled wire by hand.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The objective when I design is to convey freshness and femininity using nature as a base. My creative process begins by researching on Art Nouveau, observing the details on the architecture, fashion and patterns present in this movement where they highlight nature in organic forms.
Taken this to the creative process I start directly experimenting sculpting the wax and little by little I get the expected result. The Gerbera earrings are a custom design where the essence of each person and the definition of each stone comes together.
CHALLENGE: When reproducing the piece we must be very careful when the wax is injected into the mold and wait for the wax to cool to be able to detach it from the mold without breaking the stems of the flowers. The weight of the earrings was considered from the selection of the drop stones so that they were light stones taking care that they did not add much difference of grams and were comfortable and functional to use.
