ZJ: I've been working with the company for on-going products' packaging design, therefore it will be a long-term collaboration. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? ZJ: Approximately 3 weeks. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? ZJ: Yes, Occasional Motto is being used already by the company. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? ZJ: I know the founder of the company very well personally, and we've worked on multiple projects before. So, when he mentioned that he was about to founding a stationery studio and asked me to design a brand identity for him, I accept the offer with no hesitation. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? ZJ: Nod Young from the A Black Cover Design FS: Who is the target customer for his design? ZJ: College students and people who works in art-related professions. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? ZJ: Occasional Motto is the company's name. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? ZJ: Adobe Illustrator and photoshop. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? ZJ: The unity of the design throughout the arrangement of the texts and illustration, and the refrain use of decorative design languages, Occasional Motto's brand identity shows a distinct and unique appearance among similar products. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? ZJ: No I worked on the design on my own. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? ZJ: Yes and no. I did research a lot before starting the project, mostly on other stationery products, which is a vital part of the brand design process, the competing-products research. But I will not say my design is influenced by the data or the research, the research is just a supplementary tool, but not necessarily a decisive approach. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? ZJ: The design process of the Occasional Motto was very smooth. Because I know the funder of the company personally very well and had worked for him on multiple design projects before so I kind of know his personal tastes and fondness. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? ZJ: I just want to see how experienced professionals view my works as designer. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? ZJ: Communicating with my clients and see what they like and what they don't of the work.
