Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Rafael de Araujo (Rd) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Rafael de Araujo by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Pop Up Magazine here.

Interview with Rafael de Araujo at Wednesday 6th of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
Rd: During the whole process, we wanted to keep a constant flow, because the design was done thinking for the animation, so organic elements, morphing/transforming shapes was our idea and inspiration. The game GRIS and the artist Alexis Beauclair was one of our references.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
Rd: I wanted to focus on the consistency during the animation and the storytelling, even if it's an abstract story. When you see the concept of ''escape'', the theme from the show, the animated elements as the door, the circle escaping from the pattern, city, nature, starts to make sense.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
Rd: Produce more personal pieces and use this award for bigger opportunities.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
Rd: around 2 months

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
Rd: The project was commissioned, but I had freedom enough to develop the design and to do something with my style.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
Rd: Yes, the design was for Pop Up Magazine show.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
Rd: The kind of show, and the chance to design, animate, and direct something with my style.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
Rd: Annie Jen was the client Art director, we built the script together and she was approving and giving me feedback.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
Rd: Primary for people who attended the show.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
Rd: It's a contemplative piece to watch and it's intriguing at the same time. A design piece for animation requires more than technical skills, you have to create an atmosphere for your storytelling, balancing and combining music, design, and animation.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
Rd: It's an opening for the show, (with the same name), was not my creation.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
Rd: It was all digital, using Photoshop and After Effects.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
Rd: It's a simple piece but also complex. Colors were limited, shapes are repeated, but the piece is constantly changing in a morphing flow. All the process was done thinking in animation.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
Rd: I didn't collaborate with other artists to produce the piece.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
Rd: Since everything was done digitally, the role of technology was huge.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
Rd: I did a narrative review of the relationship between the concept ''escape'' and the stories from the contributors, so me and Annie, Art director from Pop-Up magazine, did some sketches and collected examples from all stories, like, escape from a situation, from the city, from nature, etc.. with all ideas selected, we started to produce the piece.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
Rd: The main challenge was in the creative process, how to create an abstract piece in 1 minute and keep the storytelling making sense.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
Rd: We all put our love in this piece and I saw great potential for competitions, the project has a strong concept and is very joyful to watch. Design, color, shapes, animation, music.. all were very carefully selected to make this piece unique.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
Rd: Create a piece from scratch, participating in all the steps, and direct, made me a better professional.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
Rd: I hope this piece can inspire other talented people, to create more awesome art to us.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
